Default Another Toy... Mercedes ??

I never thought I would ever own a Mercedes, but this one is different.

I picked up a 1962 Unimog.

It was sitting for at least 6 years. The batteries were dead and the parking brake was frozen. First I removed the engine cover from the cabin, and took the leaf blower to remove all the leafs and whatever was there.

Once I found the carburetor, I removed it as well the fuel pump and the filter, to get it all cleaned up.

I checked the fuel and it was surprisingly clear.

After I installed the fuel system, I tried to start the engine. I found that some of the wiring was eaten up by some guests who lived in there. So I repaired some wires and with 2 of my batteries I brought with me I got the started turning, but no fuel got to the carb.

So I got a electrical fuel pump an run a separate fuel line to the carb power from my battery jumper, since the Unimog runs on 24V. An the damn thing started. So now the next challenge was that there was no brakes, no fluid left in the tank. So I went home and got the trailer.

After unloading it from the trailer, I gave it a bath with the high pressure washer to get all the mold and dirt off.

After removing the tarp and the bows from the bed, it actually did fin in the shop.

So I started with the brakes.

So this is where most of the brake fluid went.

I took all apart and cleaned up the mess.

Here are the parts removed and to be sorted out and cleaned.

To be continued
Engelbert

Love it!!!!

Sometime in the late 1970s/early 1980s my dad had a similar inkling. There weren't many Unimogs in the states then (and likely aren't many more now?) but most he found were too rusty, so he replaced his dream with a different project - a 1946 Willy's CJ2 (which was somehow seemingly also rusty as any of the unimogs)

Looks like a fun project. You may want to give a quick rinse to those trays before serving hors d'oeuvres next time.

Not sure yet, but I want to get it mechanically working and may use it for some trips to the home improvement store.
