IIRC, we replaced ours twice and it's been updated by factory several times. First time car went into limp mode. 2nd time we changed preemptively when service manual showed newer version(S). Same with oil pump, never had an issue but changed it out preemptively.

'09 S manual - Over 30,000 track miles, with less than ideal throttle matches along the way , and running strong. Motor and tran on this car have been rock solid.

I would presume that since the 2.9l base engines are not DFI, that fuel pump issues don't plague those cars vs the 3.4 "S" model engines that are DFI.

I think that’s a safe assumption but I don’t have any experience with the 2.9s. I think ‘09s had most issues being first gen pumps. The early Interseries Caymans we’re running a fuel additive to prevent failures. But issues were solved soon after with updated pumps.

So.. I went looking. Seems like a 987.2 base (ie, 2.9l) may fit if I search hard. Given their age (up to 10 years old) any feedback on the reliability, particularly of the 2.9 non DFI engine? Most folks seemed to have bought an S version so I am a little curious.

Given the expected role/use (see thread above) I am not really searching for an S and feel a base would be fine. My commute is approx 30 miles, 20 of which are highway cruising. Mornings traffic free, PMs some times up to 2 hours to get home

PDK maintenance concerns?
Do these engines develop bore scoring like I read on the 987.2S/911 motors?

I had a 2000 boxster and of course worried about the plastic rear window, seemingly endless MAF issues (on line any way), IMS, RMS etc. It seems like the .2 cars are much improved in many ways vs my older example.

TIA.
How is your search progressing?

While the search is always active in the back of my mind, the actual search is on hold due to some family health issues.

Thought I would bump this up given the intended use and ask if the base 987.2 is enough or is it necessary to jump to the “S”

Well.. sidetracked by getting a car for the "boy"... see new thread.

My DD will continue as is for now (2008 Lexus ES350). A japanese Buick if there ever was one!

I know you were looking 2.9, but can't resist chiming in.

Bought my 987.2 S Boxster a year ago in Jan and have put 7k miles on it since (28k to 35k now). My budget was $30k and I ended up spending $31k.

It had a Milltek muffler from PO and I've now added EVOMSit software and the car is an absolute blast and the best $900 I've ever spent on any Porsche.

I used to commute/dd in air-cooled Porsches, and then a MKIV R32, and the BS is by far my favorite--all the creature comforts you need in DC (ie. working A/C) plus balls to the wall performance when you want it. And that includes the '72 E that Russell Kessler rebuilt to RS+ specs.

Did my first HPDC a month ago and really felt I finally explored the car's true limits. Never drove any 2.9's but I expect you'd feel quite a bit of difference to the '00 you owned.

Best of luck w/ the search/purchase.

I've never driven a 987.2 S, but I've driven a bunch of the original 986 S cars. The 986 feels faster because it's a little more raw, but in reality, my 987.2 base is just as quick as a 986 S, and plenty of punch around town when you step in to it.

I try not to drive in stereotypical "P-car douchebag" style with the car, but it really does invite a bit of hooliganism. The 2.9 is NOT a torquey mill. It wants to be revved.
