I remember many hours spent doing overdubs and multi track recordings between the two RTRs. Good times. Did you take the SAE pop/click eliminator to go with the turn table?

Ah, no I did not. I had a shy and impatient 6 year old with me, and did not look close enough at the other components.

I have a problem I'm trying to run down / solve.

Problem: my literally 20-year-old 2-channel audio setup is starting to occasionally drop out on both channels (intermittent, both sides show the problem but usually not at the same time). Source doesn't matter (it happens on all of them).

- Preamp is a McCormack Micro Line Drive, run using the passive outputs
- Amp is an Aragon 8008BB
- Speakers (much newer) are PSB Synchrony One Bs (6ohm nominal/4ohm minimum impedance) w/ powered REL sub.

Is the problem more likely to be the power amp or the preamp?

Given that both the preamp and power amp are both 20 years old, I'm considering replacing with an integrated amp, budgeting around $2k or so. Any suggestions? I'm thinking Cambridge Audio Azur 851a for one. I do not need digital inputs or XLR balanced inputs.

OTOH, if it's likely the power amp, then I may just pick up a new power amp.

- Rega P1 Plus turntable
- Cambridge Audio DACmagic 100

Other thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
ed

The best thing to do is swap components and see. Do you have any close-by friends or good neighbors with separates who would let you borrow an amp or preamp?

As a first step I would switch to the active preamp outputs and see if that helps at all (doesn't seem like it should, but easy enough to try).

Also, are the cable connections all good and tight? Both into the components, and also the connectors to the individual cables).

Hmm, does the channel (s) come by with moving the volume? Could be speaker relay? Is there click upon power up?

2 suggestions both in Falls Church - 1. Brett Mullins at Hifi Heaven Repairs if you want to have the amp checked. 2. Below Brett in Command Performance AV - really nice guys, no pressure sales https://commandav.com I'd look at NAD, Hegel, Prima Luna (if you like tubes), Cambridge, Naim - depends on your taste.

Good luck and let us know how it works out. I have a ton of spare interconnects if you want to try that route and a spare 2 channel amp - located in Pot Falls not far from Herndon/Reston.

I'll have to contact Brett, he's close to me and my dad's Marantz 2270 could use a tune (been 30 years since it was serviced)

Thanks David and John for the suggestions. I'll start with looking at the cable/interconnects and then may PM you (John) to borrow the amp.

The volume control seems completely unrelated to when the sound cuts out (i.e., not a scratchy pot).

There is definitely a click when the amp is powered up (the recommendation for this amp is to power down when not in use); I do not hear a click when the sound cuts out either.

I have a spare amp and preamp you can borrow. Hafler DH-220 amp, Carver pre amp (CT-27V).

My money is on the amp. Have you noticed it dropping out to particular music (thinking speaker load)? Room temperature? Power grid? I looked up your amp (nice amp, good pick) and see it doubles at 4 ohms so dropping impedance shouldn’t be a problem, but the 2 massive torroidal power supplies may be strangling your power grid - no power conditioner for the amp, correct?

A couple questions first:

Will the turntable be your only source?

Do you have a phono preamp?
