Default Old vise repair

My oldest daughter just bought a house near us. She wanted originality, and that originality continued into the garage. Love the pencil sharpener and ashtray.

The jaw on the vise won't open when I unwind it. I don't know if that clip is the cause of the issue, but clearly it's not in the correct spot.

I'm looking for guidance on fixing the vise. Thanks.

Looks like its just that clip is supposed to be in the groove on the screw up against the moving jaw. I stopped by on the way home last night and moved it there, but it wouldn't stay. Didn't have much time to play with it.

1. Congrats on kid #1 buying a house!
2. I have a pencil sharpener just like that one, but sadly, no matching ashtray
3. As usual, I am no help with the original question

Yup, it looks like the clip needs to be next to the jaw, and it looks like the shoulder the clip fits against is worn.

If you want, bring over the screw shaft and the outer jaw, and we can re-cut the shoulder in the lathe. Or, if needed, weld it up and then re-cut the shoulder.

The screw shaft should just unscrew and the outer jaw should pull out. Although, there may be a roll pin or clip to remove before the jaw will pull completely out.
