steve... it's a bit like cars. you can hop into a honda and pretty much beat on it from the start. engine might not be happy but will oblige. heat will work instantly etc etc, whereas the aircooled cars need to warm up before any of the excitement (and heat) is available.

This type of amp really is great for acoustic music at moderate sound levels (unless you have some $ horns). Not the best for 'rocking out' (runs out of steam pretty early), but can be eerily lifelike when listening to certain types of music/ recordings! What is your source going to be? Please don't say an iPod!

Here's another parts resource, although you have probably already come across them. They used to make the Sonic Frontiers gear, which was always outstanding:

This actually factored into my decision. I don't 'rock out' to music and listen to/have more jazz, blues, vocals etc than rock. 300b's are known for their silky smooth mid-range and can really exploit good recordings by bringing out the detail and small nuances, but are typically slow to respond (overpowered) by fast paced music. Push-pull type amps can handle the fast swings better, put out twice the watts, but theoretically loose a bit of the detail. I'm really looking (hearing) forward it.

This schematic allows for outputs close to 8WPC max, (which is pretty substantial for a single ended 300b) and can be pushed pretty close to its max w/o audible distortion. From what I've read, with decently sensitive speakers (>93db which I don't have), you'll have a hard time finding the limits of this amp.

Currently, my only source is an old hand-me-down belt drive turntable and mediocre CD player. My speakers are the ones that came with my JVC bookshelf unit 15 years ago One thing at a time.

For those interested, it's been a while but I've made some progress on the 300B.

I pretty much have all the components, minus the $$ 300B output tubes and a handful of resistors.

Here are a couple pics of different layout iterations. The object here is to minimize the wire runs from component to component and segregate as much as possible the power supply AC components from the sensitive signal components.

Iteration-1:

Iteration-2:

Pretty much the final layout:

The final layout tweaked a little and mapped out on paper:

1/8" aluminum sheet cut, holes drilled and components mounted for mock-up:

Everything fits pretty well and is HEAVY, guessing about 60-70 lbs. Next step is to take it back apart, smooth out the holes, paint, reassemble and start wiring. Also need to build the chassis/cabinet to hold it.

I'll keep you guys posted as it comes along.

That is sooooo sweet!

How are you handling tube bias adjustment? Will there be Cardas silver wiring throughout?

Those little pots mounted between the while nylon washers are for bias adjustment. Pretty nice feature as I can tune the bias for regular 300B voltage/current points, or juice it up a bit if I want to use some of the beefy KR-Audio 300B-on-steroid tubes. Need to put those on lock-down.....in case someone confuses them for volume knobs...DOH!

No Cardas, but have some nice thin gauge teflon costed o2-free copper

if you position them strategically between the big burn-your-skin tubes, few people will think of reaching for them (unless cold, duh.)

it looks awesome charlie! glad to see you making some real progress on it... maybe by the time it's finished we can actually listen to it and play w/ it and try out different speakers.... that is if you ever felt like lifting it again

Wow. Nice.

Come home this winter and bring it (or dimentions) and we'll make a cabinet for it in the shop.

Do you have a chassis dyno?

Who has some nice high-efficiency speakers we can try it out on? Mine are not made for use with flea-powered amps. I'll bring a Dark Side of the Moon CD and a decent CD player, though (not hi-def -- still living in the 16-bit age until good hi-def gets cheaper) . Pari can bring some gansta tunes!

I can't wait to see the pre-amp Charlie builds to go along with this amp!

My thoughts exactly......but I still need to reach for them.
