E36 Airbag light - Need stock seats to pass inspection
Hi Folks! Good to meet you all.
I'm currently trying to get an up-to-date inspection for my '99 M3. I swapped in seats from a E46 M3 and haven't been able to get all the wiring sorted to get the airbag light to turn off. Does anyone have stock E36 seats laying around that I could borrow for a weekend? Would be happy to provide appropriate compensation in cash, craft beer, or both! Also would welcome advice on how to rig up the E46 seats to the E36 wiring harness. Haven't been able to find helpful content on various national forums. |

If you want to come borrow my e36 seats for a weekend you can do that. Come pull the seats and swap them into your car. Leave the e46 seats in mine. Then do the reverse next week. I am in bristow and can make that work this weekend. Do you have the ability to clear the srs code? The code won’t go away without clearing it.

Curious if the connectors are the same e46 and e36? Did you disconnect battery when swapping seats? If they connected up correctly and you didn’t disconnect the battery, then the issue may just be clearing the code.

Thanks so much!
I do have the SRS scan/reset tool and unfortunately the connectors are not the same. I have tried bypassing the connectors and manually connecting the wires to no avail. Does Saturday morning work for you? Send me a PM and we can plan a time. |

I have a friend who's selling a nice set of E36 black leather sport seats from a sedan if you want a permanent fix. PM me if you are interested.

Thanks! I really like the E46 seats I installed as they are not only more comfortable but they sit lower which means ample room for my helmet!

If the problem is either the seat belt or the air bag sensor under the seat(s), you can quite easily jump the leads with a resistor, it’s a permanent fix. IIRC, the air bag sensor takes a 42K and the seat belt is 100 Ohms. You can find the procedures by searching the web.

My passenger seat occupancy sensor was going and already, when I installed Recaros in my 97 e36. I searched "e36 airbag bypass" and bought one from Europe for less than $15 or so. It has been in the car for over a year and airbag lights hasn't been a problem.
