I have a list of cars in my head that I could realistically own, and I cycle through the list regularly of which one I want at that moment. (C5 Z06, 993 C2S, E92 M3, S550 Mustang, 996 TT, etc.).

The one on my mind at current is the '87-'88 911 w/ the G50 trans and the 3.2 - a "best of breed" car IMHO. I was watching a Matt Farah/The Smoking Tire YouTube video last week (don't judge...) where he buys an '88 and does the "Safari" treatment on it. It was a narrow-body with a whaletale, clearly a well-kept "driver" car with about 90K miles. Before the car was modified, he gave a thorough walk around and test drive, and it reminded me of everything that was right about a friend's '77 911, plus all the improvements they made before the 964 was released.

What I think I want is a very-close-to stockish car, that will be a fun driver on weekends and will make the occasional slog to work. No track time, probably no auto-x, just a usable, streetable car that won't spend all it's time on jackstands.

So...Dorki faithful are asking "What does this have to do with us?"
- Value-wise, have we hit the top of the range for these yet?
- Are these cars truly as bullet-proof as legend has it? (Yes, I know a good engine rebuild for these is $20K-$30K)
- If you were shopping for one, what are the "must-have" services, modifications, etc. ?

Thank you that’s actually how I wound up with the 79 911SC, primarily due to condition. It wasn’t even on my list when I saw it for sale but the condition immediately vaulted it to the top. Go see and drive as many old 911’s as you can find. They are all hand built and everyone I have driven has been a bit different from the last one.

As for the 997 I like the way you think. I was looking for a 997.2 base six speed coupe when I found my current car. IMHO if you can find one they are worth a look.

I guess reading comprehension isn’t your thing.

You have a GT3 and two air cooled P-cars, exactly who is money

So why not make some noises to your CEO about his 993? The WB cars carry a premium in the market, but maybe he's ready to move on and likes the cut of your jib.

I've been DDing my 993 since last winter's refresh. It's mostly stock, has the right feel in driving, shifting, braking, and hearing. The sound system is OK, the AC works, and it makes every day fun even stuck in traffic.

The 964 has always been the ultimate for me. When it came out and I saw how it flowed with the bumpers and the bellows and rubber bumpers gone, it was love at first sight. And it hasn’t disappointed. Though I purposefully bought a modified one, for various reasons, but a lot of people say they only come alive when modified and stock is kinda disappointing, so I didn’t have the chance for that potential disappointment stage. And it sounds awesome with a race cat and long g pipe.

However, I had a SC before that, and some days I wonder if that wasn’t the more special car. The 964 is awesome because it has the classic shape but more modern mechanicals, like the G50. But the SC with the manual steering and cable clutch and 915 was a ton of fun. The G50 feels modern. The 915 feels special (if not worn out, and it’s better with a Wevo shifter). You could feel everything in that car, in a ways you can’t in any other car I’ve driven. The steering wheel communicated everything. You could feel the gear slotting in place. And it was so much lighter than my other cars, even at 2600 lbs. That car always felt special to drive. I regret getting rid of that one but it was the right move at the time. Keeping my eyes open for another one, though.

Speaking of hero cars and disappointment. E39 M5, as awesome as they say, zero disappointment. E46 M3, never really connected to it and felt the engine was boring. Could never get comfortable in the stock seats. That’s ultimately why I sold it. Loved driving 911s more, even 20 year older ones. I actually liked my E36 more than the E46, and like my new F80 even more than both.
In BMW-land, I've had
(1) 2002 - '76 rusty pile of junk
(2) e28s - '82 528e, '87 535i
(2) e30s - '86 325e, '87 325is
(3) e36s - '93 325i, '98 M3 sedan, '97 M3 coupe (now Karl's)
(1) e46 - '00 323i touring
(1) F31 - '14 328ix touring (current DD)

I consider myself an e36 guy, as they just connect with me. I've had them in varying states of tune (gutted/caged race car, streetable track car, and bone stock). I fit well, all the controls feel natural, and I'm just at home in them. I had Karl's car for 4 years (an eternity for me), but just didn't need a track car in my life for a little while.

Would be a nice car, heat works well, AC if redone should be OK but not the greatest. I run my car pretty much as a daily driver, no problem in traffic similar to any other manual, no power steering is fine once moving, parking just takes a bit more. no ABS is fine and no a bad thing IF you have had any threshold braking training.

Interesting car in a slightly odd color, but likely a color that would grow on you quickly. On paper, that's very much what I'd be looking for. I'm not surprised by the price, but I look at too many BaT auctions, so my sense of what is normal is probably a bit inflated.

I had mine at the open Board Meeting in Rockville on Saturday!! I bought mine off the internet back in December 1998 Pictures were not great and I did not really like the colour Bad pics in those days, but it ticked all the boxes otherwise. Had a PPI done and flew out to Chicago to pick it up. Almost immediately liked the colour and lot of passer byes still think it is great. It did have the Targa Bar painted same which I immediately had resprayed Black.
If you want to see it I am in Easton on the shore!!
