Default Questions about MD resident purchasing car in VA

This has probably been addressed before, but I didn't find an answer with search . . .

I'm considering purchase of a "new" used daily driver. I might check out a car in VA. If I do buy a car in VA and then register it in MD, how does sales tax work? Looks like the VA tax rate is 4.15%, and MD is 6%. I don't think I will get stuck paying both Do I pay the VA tax at purchase and then pay the difference when registering in MD?

Living in VA and having bought a car from a MD dealership, my recollection is that you pay the sales tax when you go to register the car. Registration is tied to the principal garaging location for the vehicle - whatever that means. You pay the tax when you go to register the car. So in your case, it sounds like you just pay the MD tax.

Are you buying from a dealer or private party? Private party would be no big deal, so assume a dealer? I would think a competant dealer would know the work arounds as well. As others mentioned, most times tax is paid at title/registration time.

You pay tax when you register, not when you buy. Biggest problem with buying in VA is if you're looking at a private party sale or one of those shady roadside used car places. Most of the time the car will not be ready for MD inspection, which is a one-time deal when you first buy the car and is usually tough as hell.

I am looking at late model certified VW from a stealer. So, should be good for MD inspection.

Thanks for the info!

Have bought 2 cars in the past in VA, the dealer collected the MD tax, when I had the vehicle inspected, I sent the inspection certificate to the dealership, who handled all the filings. Tags arrived a week or so later.
Depending where in VA, some dealerships work with shops in MD, so they can get the MD inspection done for you, to cut out you having to do it.
As others said, if a private sale, then you pay everything(tax, tags, registration) when you go to MVA, after it's been inspected.

^^^

Show the dealer that you reside out of state and you are exempt form paying local taxes. You will pay Maryland upon registration. As stated above Maryland has one of the toughest state in inspections in the county. Most cars from out of state will not pass Maryland inspection. Insist on putting the car through MARYLAND STATE SAFETY INSPECTION prior to purchase.

I think, now, the inspection certificate is done electronically from the inspection station to MVA. So, it cuts out the mailing portion.

Most VA dealers will not do MD inspections so negotiate it into the deal or make them cover any repairs necessary to pass. Also, if you buy from a dealer you only need to pay MD 6% tax on the difference of your trade-in and new car purchase price. This is not available if you buy from a private seller.
