We Won! (sorta) - 2009 LeMons - Fall CMP
Some of you probably noticed my lack of track time this season. With the intention of spending more time close to home, I chose to temporarily suspend my DE time in lieu of putting together a LeMons team. Clearly this was an awful decision because I have lived in the garage for months now. At least we didn't come home empty handed!
Our 4-man driver team of all 944 guys worked long an hard on this project... Andy Clements John Peerenboom (John) Patrick Sheridan (ptsheridan) Rob Carpenter (rcarpen) Some of you are aware of our hopeless old 1975 BMW e12 turned LeMons racer. By some miracle, we overcome every possible adversity and actually got this project finished without a minute to spare. We got the car to the track with our full and over-the-top theme modeled faithfully after the original 1970's BMW factory Jagermeister sponsored race cars. It was an instant success with the other racers and the race organizers/judges who absolutely loved it....even though we all knew it was hopeless. With an engine clearly clearly hurting from 30+ years of abuse, and a fake body kit made from plywood and plastic we knew our weekend would be short - but we WERE going to have fun. Absolutely nobody was more surprised than us when our old orange tank just keep turning slow lap after slow lap. We couldn't believe that our engine held together, the diff didn't explode, and the ridiculous body kit stayed mostly intact all weekend. We ran the whole race from green flag to checkered, and the car continues to almost run on MAYBE two cylinders....when you can get it started. We had absolutely no chance at the overall win (there were some very fast cars!) but we were completely blown away to take home the highly coveted "Index of Effluency" award.....basically the judges choice for the crappiest car that held in there the longest.....the underdog champion if you will. We walked out with a cool trophy, $1000 in exceptionally heavy nickels, a huge smile, and eternal bragging rights in the 24 hours of LeMons world. We are ecstatic, and we also owe a HUGE thanks to several people. Most notably our own Vicegrip (KM) was absolutely essential in helping get this pig race ready and legal. Also, Bob Mulligan and Dave McMahon both pitched in to lend a huge help, and since I was in diapers when this car rolled off the assembly line their....ummm..."historical expertise" proved invaluable. Thanks to everybody that supported us and helped along the way (including my wife who has been a single mom to our children for the last few months). There are lots more pics on the blog....and more updates of the story of how we built it coming soon... http://rustyboltracing.com/

Yes, this whole thing was an incredible amount of work and almost certainly took years off all of our lives, but the payoff was huge. Ever since I first heard of LeMons and the IoE, I've wanted to be a part of it. I'm not sure how to top this outcome, but I definitely want to run the race again. I also want to thank all the Dorkis who helped out (and the ones who at least tried to conceal their laughter when I brought the car to the Intersport Tech Inspection). There's no way we would have been able to pull this off without Bob, Dave, JazzBass, ViceGrip and probably several others that I'm forgetting right now. You guys are awesome. Clearly misguided, but awesome. Really? Wow.... I'm sorry.
