Got it! With 2 people looking (one from the bottom and the other from the top) we were able to identify a path, mark it with a coat hanger, get the old sensor out, and get the new sensor in. That sounds a whole lot easier than it actually was.

We also had to loosen the heat shield a bit

I bet the thought of spending money to have a shop do it was just the motivation you needed to figure it out.
