Well, part of this fiasco is over. after much discussions with insurance companies on value, I have accepted the deal with USAA (my insurance company) and the car is now mine to deal with. Plan to push it into the garage this weekend and cut off the hood and see if it is viable to rebuild. One big concern is the rear end damage which wont allow the trunk to close all the way. Not something I can do myself, but if it can be done relatively inexpensively will try and get it to a local frame repair shop to see if it can be pulled out enough to close the trunk. seems to be only about an inch from being able to shut, but something better determined by an expert. The front is another issue...wont know until I can take off the hood.

Have a chain and a big truck? Here is how you straighten BMW trunks.
Doing the same to the front end requires a large tree and another chain/strap

Pulled this car into the garage this weekend. Trunk won't close and some damage to front drivers side rail which leads to bumper support. May be repairable using the truck pull or heat and use a come along (sp?).
But it is going to require a set of headlights, ac condenser, trans cooler, ac aux fan, radiator, head light mounts, front radiator support, front air grill, and a hood. Plus at a min some painting to have the external parts match. Just a conservative cost is about 500 to 700 bucks, and likely higher as it needs tires and an alignment which likely takes this to about 1000 to 1200. At that point I have a e36 with a rebuilt title and body damage that was never correctly repaired. I think it is better to just part the car, and when the correct one comes along in the spring replace it. Any thoughts from this very useful group?

The salvage title, body damage, etc. is only an issue if you go to sell it later. If you want to use the car for a few years, repair it now and then part it when you are done.
If you really don't intend to drive it though, go ahead and part it now (saving whatever you need for other cars you may have or intend on acquiring soon).

i think you might have fun replacing with an E46. We currently own a E36 1996 328i and an E46 2004 330Ci Coupe. The E46 is my current DD. For my taste, the E46 is a much nicer car hands down.

E36 sedan is gone to the crusher. Daughter learned to drive a manual so is taking over the 328is. All three kids will have been able to say that car was theirs for a time being(thanks to Fritz and Karl for that car). I have my eye on a Lexus sc300 manual which I am going to play with for a while. Good deal on relatively rare manual. Has a few issues but low miles and given the interest in these cars it should be as easy sell if I don't like it.
