Jerome, your response was great until this part... How unwoke of you! This is 2023, for Dog's sake!

The orientation of concrete masonry units is none.of.your.business. How would you feel if you had a sibling or child that was a concrete masonry unit, and random strangers commented on their orientation, and if they think it is 'right' or not? I bet you would not appreciate it! CMUs have been struggling with this type of bias and prejudice since the 1920s, and it's time we put a stop to it.

...and don't even go on about how you may think being oriented one way or another means they will be stronger/ weaker, as that just adds sexism to picture.

Frankly I would expect this sort of thing on an Audi or BMW forum, but I thought Porsche people would be above it.

Ahh, you missed that I said 'casting' holes, so the blocks are just acting to get a job, which means they can be anything they please.

I've carried and laid thousands of CMUs and the holes were always vertical. Geee, that sounds bad...

Sorry to the OP for the off-topic rant of my woke friend.

I think the OP got his answer, so this thread getting disoriented is in the old Dorki spirit. We have not had in before the lock in ages.
Anyway, the objection of your friend is not due to wokeness. He just has had bad experiences with your suggestion of how holes should be oriented.
He enjoys coming across as an a..hole, and did not want the block assume his orientation.

Good, but big political candidate signs are infinitely more durable as they are corrugated plastic and readily available once an election is over. Not absorbent however.

I have a lift the OP is welcome to use for a day but I live up near BWI airport.
Thanks for the offer - I'm going with the Quickjack. I have plenty sheets of cardboard...save them for this sort of use. I like the idea of political signs...

When finished, rate the job by how many cups of kitty litter.
