But in Hemingway's day, few racers lived through their careers. Now it's big news (still horrible news).

That perhaps the reason Hemingway considered it a sport was because of how dangerous it was then. But you knew that, didn't you Stephen

Perhaps the main point here is that in Hemmingway's day you had to be prepared to take great risk to do many things. Money or position was no help when driving a race car [or climbing Everest, or....]

Today, any schmuck can buy their way into almost anything. Pay $40K and an experienced guide and sherpas will drag your sorry arse as far up Everest as you can go before your body gives up or you summit. People have died on the mountain because of the human traffic jams caused by slow and unprepared 'climbers' at the choke points above C5. Pay even more and you can be a race driver. Hemmingway would not have wanted to live in this time.

How do you know? He never summited Everest. Perhaps he would have written something good after having experienced that perspective. Look what he did with a Sunday spent fishing...

C'mon, he was just chewing on the end of his Scott pigeon gun when it accidentally discharged. He was happy as a clam - see below.

I met his grand daughter Margo once. Unhappiness must run in the family because she killed herself too.

"Lets face it the freedom to drink, whore, and enjoy life in Cuba has been ruined."

Compared to the 60's and 70's, it's been ruined here as well.
