So VICE brings up a good point but reaches the wrong conclusion. Lets say I have to spend another $1000 to get a bike 2 pounds lighter, or I can simply loose 2 pounds off my gut and achieve the same effect. This is a logical conclusion and it also a logical conclusion to assume, using the same analyses, that I have another 25 or so pounds of fat around my body and therefore, that fat is worth $12, 000 - $15,000 (ball-park). Why would I want to loose that?

If you have never had your ass handed to you in a sprint by a man with a formidable gut you really have not been properly humbled. It smarts in a good way.
The best comment I ever got from one of my coached athletes was "fuck you man, I have to buy all new suits".

It has been well documented that when it comes to weight loss liposuction is cheaper / gram than taking weight off of the bike at the top tiers.

Went on a ride with a group that was made up of some regulars and new members. a guy rolls up on a bike that was of good brand a build but looked like it has never ever once been cleaned*. The rider looked and dressed like Belcher from Revenge of the nerds. Some of the regulars were making quiet side bets as to when "Pig pen" would be dropped. Belcher slipped into the line and rode well during the ride, good form, good line skills and crushed the pack at the sprint. *Except that the drive train was in top shape.

Karl, what I did was hang a bunch of parts I already had on the new frame. The frame was $500. It is interesting to note is was about 5 times more new 2005 I think. I have not weighed it yet but will do. It is light. If your interested I found a good source for used and NOS parts out of CO. I have had very good luck with them and the condition of the parts have been very good. I did have to buy a new front derailer (and a few other small parts) to make a matching group. I do think it is worth something now however.

Thanks it is fun, I put on a set of Mavic Ksyrium SLS's, a CF seat post and lightweight seat that got ther down to 16.8 lbs on the bathroom scale. Not quite as cost effective as your build but a very fun ride. I need to looose another 10 lbs before putting in some serious miles
Just for kicks I did a budget build of a single speed starting with a Critical Harper from the big online retailer. Added some extra parts I had lying around and that bike is surprisingly fast, light and agile. I would highly recommend one if you are looking for a cheap single/fixed. I think we have enough parts for another fixed gear if I can find a suitable frame, 56cm. If you don't mind sharing your parts source send me a pm with the details.

Guys, I ride fixed gear for part of every winter and used to have a training group but that's long gone. We mandated that everyone run 68 to 72 gear inches which made for awesome smooooothe pacelines.
Just back from a few hrs. riding in Olney, MD 70/30% road/dirt. It's hilly out there.

Hey Karl - Look what I found in my basement. Its even a 56cm. to big for me. paint is rough and a small dig in the chainstay right behind the bottom bracket. Might even have the original fork.
