Default Porsche-Less for First Time in 23 Years

As of about noon today, I am without a Porsche for the first time since I bought a 1986 944 back in August of 1997.

On the afternoon of Sunday, July 5th of this year, I was driving the 996 at Road America, and having quite the fun time. Heading into turn 5 the motor blew Dissection of the motor (by Roger at Autotherapy) reveals a failed freeze plug in the driver's side cylinder head and a failed #1 rod bearing. The current theory is that the freeze plug failed, that allowed rapid movement of coolant into places it shouldn't be, and the displacement of oil by coolant led to failure of the bearing. I got off the track pretty quick after I saw the smoke, but maybe it doesn't take too long for this sort of thing to happen.

Having recently put a ton of money into the motor, I decided I wasn't going down that road again. I sold the car as a roller.

My son is on schedule to get his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in 2022. Maybe at that time I will get back into the Porsche game. But it ain't happening any time soon. I did take money I got for the 996 and put it toward a 2017 GTI, so at least I will have a reasonably entertaining daily driver

F***ing cars!

Mark,
So sorry to hear about your engine failure. The GTI will be good driver fun, but hopefully you'll see an opportunity later to get back into the P-car game.

Mark,

Sorry for your trouble, sometimes it’s better to just cut and run.

Hope to see you at the track soon.

I'm sorry for you too, Mark, but I almost have you beat by a few months (Gold 911 purchased Spring 1997, sold the 997.2 2 weeks ago), except that I sold the Black car over an year before I bought the 997.2...

What am I driving now? A 2017 GTI! Good choice, Mark (it's actually a blast around town because, unlike the 997, you can wind it up without going 110 MPH).

Otto--Thanks for the note about the Boxster. I really miss the '99 Boxster that I had for ten years, and the thought of getting another Boxster has crossed my mind lately. However, now that I purchased the GTI, I figure I won't be making any other car purchases for a while.

Lara--I hope to keep up with everyone, one way or another. I hope to play with the GTI at autocrosses.

mark, the offer remains open, should you change your mind

i know you, and if it does go, i want to keep it in the family

i have kept is well sorted over the years, taking it from 28k miles to now 75k miles

i was saving it for a boy, now 16, who has indicated no interest in cars at all, and even if he gets one, only wants a basic small automatic

i am looking to get a 981 boxster s to go along with my 981 cayman s

i found it very useful to swap wheels and brake pads when i had the 987 boxster s and the 987 cayman s... lol

enjoy autox in the gti, it will be fun, but the boxster, top down autox is really more fun! lol
