Local, cheap source for cutting key
Hi All,
Looking for a recommendation of someone local (MoCo preferred) and reasonably-priced who has key blanks and can duplicate my '97 Boxster key. I broke my only key off while the key was in the ignition and I was climbing in. Hit it with my knee. D'oh!!! Thankfully was able to extract the key from the switch. I plan to secure the immobilizer pill near the ignition switch so I can use a generic key head and will get 2 keys made. On a separate topic, considering the hassles of registering a used vehicle in MD, getting plates for a historic vehicle is surprisingly easy and non-invasive... I got plates with little fuss, and the MVA agent was a former SCCA racer. (Thanks for the guidance, Karl).

1. JB weld it back into the fob.
2. Silver solder it to another key head. Call locksmiths and ask who can do this type of cut. Get blanks on line. Dealer! (Bring all your financial info for the loan)

I fully expected you to offer giving it a try using the ol' plasma cutter
Epoxy it to a nickel that can serve as the 'head' if it will fit, or with a penny if a nickel is too big. Go ghetto or go home.

I'm guessing you've confirmed that the metal portion actually broke, versus the inside of the plastic keyfob. AFAIK, the keyfob can be disassembled for battery, etc.
If its going to be a race car, aren't you planning to A) disable the steering lock, and B) install a push-button for starting? Maybe SpecBox is more complicated to modify.

One tang on the key broke and the piece is still in the fob. I'll try to extract it but not sure I'd trust the key to stay together if glued/soldered. Blanks are ~$30 on-line so I'll get a pair and call around to locksmiths.
Steering lock already disabled and I plan to locate this fob containing the immobilizer gizmo near the ignition switch. That way I can use a standard fob without $$ reprogramming.

I had Baldino's (I think in Chantilly) cut boxster keys for me years ago. I bought several blanks online. They were able to get 2 out of 3 tries working -there is some positioning uncertainty when they clamp the original in their machine. Helps if you have the car there to try them out, which I didn't at the time.

Thanks Jeff. I stop by the Baldino's close to me to see if they can do it.

I recommend "Street Rod" tags for the older cars. Historic Tags require you to preserve the vehicle in an original state, and limit the kind of mods you can do. Street Rod tags let you do whatever you want to the car.
While the distinction won't matter to many, if you get stopped by the wrong cop, you can get a serious hassle if you are driving a obviously modified car with Historic Tags. YMMV Elric42 |

Is that a Maryland thing? I have not seen anything like that in Virginia.

In md street rod also is 25 yrs old, not 20 for historic. The distinction is 'substantial ' alteration, remodel or remanufacture.
