That's a legitimate question.

In fact, the exhaust was banging on the anti-sway bar because of the way I had to do a repair on the test pipe.

So on Saturday I began welding up a new tailpipe between the test pipe and the muffler, one which will bolt up with enough spacing away from that anti-sway bar.

The idea is that the muffler should be totally quiet, floating on its isolators, and definitely not the cause of any extra noises. This should allow any expert ears to hear the problem noise, and only the problem noise.

If there was some sort of dynamic that caused the old exhaust to tap against something (or itself) while the car was under acceleration, then I will have solved the problem. I don't think I'll be that lucky, but who knows?

I ran out of argon on Saturday and I need to get a refill this week. I'll keep you guys posted.

Bad motor mount. Passenger side gets cooked and leaks all the fluid out allowing the motor to flop around.

Might consider warming up the car/transaxel and draining the transaxel fluid. At least rule that out. I do have reason to suggest this. Just an idea.

In August of last year, I replaced the transaxle fluid with RedLine MTL.

Last week, I checked the fluid level and condition without draining the gear oil out (that's $50 worth of gear oil in there, after all). it was right at the level of the fill plug - right where I left it. And the oil that I sampled was still the same pink-ish color it was when I put it in, with no flake or metallic shimmer in it at all. Very clean.

So it doesn't appear that anything decided to become a grenade inside the case.

I don't have a record of when the motor mounts were ever replaced. So I'm betting the ones in there aren't in the best of shape, and I ordered a pair of OEM ones by Corteco from Pelican. Pricey, but peace of mind isn't always cheap.

Hopefully, my motor will be sitting solidly in the right place.

The last time I changed motor mounts was on my '76 Triumph Spitfire. It caused the headers to touch the frame and the radiator fan to ride high enough to hit the bonnet. Hopefully this experience won't do any harm like that.

This may be your problem, as long as you are randomly replacing stuff, try Swepco 201 before you decide to drop the transaxle.

MTL not recommended for fo-fo gearboxes. I use two parts Redline 75-90NS to one part 75-90 in the race cars with LSD. Swepco is also a good choice.

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-06.htm

The first recommendation on this page is MTL.

I have seen enough oil discussions to know that asking which oil i should use is like asking a roomful of car guys what is the best car in the world. Everyone will have a different answer and every one will try to convince you they are right.

I appreciate the input, and i may go with swepco in the future just based on the loudest voices in the room, but i have a hard time believing this particular noise is the fault of the oil.

I have more argon now. This weekend i will finish the exhaust. I may know more by then.

I sincerely appreciate every one of your responses and suggestions.

Hmmmmmmm. It's on the internet so it MUST be true. If you read the sentence immediately before that you will see the "IMHO" caveat the author includes.

My advice is based on fact, not opinion. From the technical specs of MTL:
MTL, MT-85 & MT-90 are not for use in differentials with hypoid gears

End of my advice for you.....

take it all in and ultimately make your own decisions...nothing wrong with that.

Hope the exhaust repairs fix the problem...if the noise is audible when the car is sitting still, it should be something you can isolate with the car in the air.
