Question Troubles with Transaxles in Silver Spring (944 N/A)

Hello everyone, welcome to my first post. It's a plea for help.

If you're near Silver Spring and wouldn't mind lending your ears to a problem I'm having with my '88 944 NA track toy, I'd appreciate it.

I've documented the issue in a couple posts on Rennlist.com. First I started a thread when I thought I knew what the issue was:

http://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-9...88-944-na.html

Then I asked for help more pointedly:

http://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-9...e-flanges.html

Finally, I'm hoping there is someone more local that can actually listen to the car with me. I'm in Hillandale (just outside the beltway off New Hampshire Ave).

Tonight I'll be doing some recordings and running the car on stands to try to locate the noise better. And I'll be working on the car on Saturday morning as well.

Here's my build thread on the car, for even more background:

PM me and let me know if you have an ear for 944 problems and, if so, what kind of beer you like.

I had a rhythmic noise (more of a womp womp womp than a crisp click) coming from my 944 when I owned the Red Baron. Similarly the noise was most pronounced under acceleration. Took some investigating but the root cause was a bad wheel bearing. YMMV. http://dorkiphus.net/porsche/showthr...edownandlocked

Thanks!

I don't think it's the bearings, since I just replaced them both:

I hope they haven't already starved themselves of grease...

Take them out and turn them around one at a time and test drive. This allows them to turn in the opposite direction and if one of the cages is galled or stretched it will sometimes quit making the noise since the ball bearings are now pushing on the opposite side. The driver side usually goes bad first due to the heat from the muffler. Doing them one at a time will help narrow the cause.

You're talking about the CV joints, right?

I swapped axles which effectively does what you're describing. Same EXACT noise. If it were the CV joints making the noise, I'm sure swapping the axles would have affected the noise somewhat.

The TICK TICK TICK sound is a lot more frequent than once per revolution of the wheel. It's like 6 or 8 times the wheel revolutions. As if there's some piece of metal that's striking the cheesehead bolt heads of the CV's as they go by, like the little indicator flap on a wheel of fortune.

I have a similar sound on my e36...very low and only seems to be there during colder mornings...after driving a bit or during warmer mornings I don't hear anything...does the sound you have go away or remain after a few minutes of driving?

Thanks.

It's actually quieter for the first few hundred yards or so. Then it becomes plenty loud and distinctive for the rest of the test.

When I first heard it, I was ten miles from home. It only got worse.

Only happens when in gear and under acceleration, yes? Does the noise stop when you put the car in neutral and coast?

Yes, it stops when coasting. In neutral, or in gear. All I have to do is lift on the accelerator pedal to quiet it completely.

Touch the accelerator again, and it's suddenly loud again.
