Good topic to share ideas. I like the 3d printing organizers for sockets. Not a lot of innovation in my tool chest but running out of space so I need to optimize. I keep collections of hex sets, impact sockets etc in their original cases to save space. I also found it easier to bring whole sets of tools in their original cases to the track instead of dipping into the chest. Some duplication but it's easier to keep a dedicated track "portable tool chest" and one for the garage.

I buy track tools at Lowe’s around Father’s Day and Christmas when they have good sales.

I throw out those wrench holders because they take up too much space and I don’t like grabbing one and getting them all or needing a second hand to free one.

I like the photos at the top where they are al on edge. Need to see if mine will fit that way.

Pretty high bar here, nice setup gents! I've used the red wrench holders for years, packs them in tight and customizable. I just added the plier racks in this box, they work great for avg size pliers. My socket drawer is still a work in progress. I like the hansen holders but the blue or red racks work great too.

One of the best ideas I stole from anyone re: garage organization was from TrakRatt years and years ago. He put all his main tools in a smaller, portable toolbox and secondary tools in the larger stationary chest. You can roll the portable chest to the work area, have a flat surface to hold stuff and have all your most important tools handy. I've long since done the same. These are the drawers in my portable chest, from top to bottom.

Top: 1/4" and 3/8" sockets and ratchets. Red thing on the left I got from Lowes and is prefect for holding all my non-hex bolt sockets - allen (because Porsche), torx and e-torx (because BMW), adapters, etc.

2nd drawer - metric wrenches, 5-19mm (larger and SAE in large box):

3rd drawer: screwdrivers & misc:

4th drawer: Pliers. I'd say this drawer was badly organized, but that would imply any amount of organization at all. There is none, just absolute plier chaos.

5th drawer: hammers, mallets and my IR impact. AKA the "you're coming off whether you like it or not" drawer:

6th and final drawer: 1/2" sockets

I don't know why it posted all the photos twice. This is my big tool box. Top to bottom:

Little stuff in the little drawers, punches, tiny screwdrivers, little flashlights, etc.
Screwdrivers sorted by regular or phillips.
Nutdrivers, allen wrenchs and anything 1/4" bits.
Things with a ratchet
Big metric
Medium and small metric
SAE (sockets are from/in a craftsman 200 piece kit that I dremeled apart to fit in here)
Things that pinch
Things that bang (and overflow wrenchs)
Precision thing (not shown)
Things that fix f*cked up threads and other goodness (and those Milwaukee ratchets Jazz recommended to me)
Lots of other stuff (not shown): pullers, odds and ends.

This bottom box is a replacement with a better one when I overloaded it with all this stuff. The old one is on the other side of the garage.

On the workbench. This grey box was a two piece deal the light stuff is here...I have little brushes in it and plastic pry tools, etc. A huge collection of replacement nuts and o-rings, wire ends, etc.

The red tool box was the bottom of the main box from other post. It's got all kinds of files and surplus other "light stuff" (shop lights in the bottom).

The bottom of the grey box has my impacts and a bunch of drill and Dremel stuff crammed in it. I never use the impacts the other is Handy under the bench.

Wide angle shot. It's in need of some tidying up but I have a lot of stuff in here. Surprised how much junk I accumulated. The one cabinet on top of the red on was supposed to be mounted on the wall. After 3 year I need to do that and put the chemicals in it (off the work surface). Name: IMG_20190716_121029940.jpg

I like to keep the 10% of the tools that do the 90% of the work out in the open where I can see them. I have a large rolling cart that has wrenches, sockets and all the stuff that goes with sockets on a clip board. Front is metric and the back is Murkin' fractional stuff. In the drawer is pivoting tools like pliers, slip joint wrenches and..vicegrips. also has all the smaller tools like picks, Allan keys and the like. Side loads are fire ex, odd tools and driver bits and a metric nut and bolt assortment. There is a long pry bar that is in a tube that is between the front and back tool panels. The side door has brake flushing equipment. The lower cabinet has top off fluids, spill cleanup stuff and a bin with the oil filters for the house cars. Other than sockets I don't use much in the way of fixed spacing organizers. I keep like tools together and stir to find as needed.

I also have a crash cart that is the pointy end of the go too tools. It has a set of standard format metric wrenches, sockets and the like up to 19mm. It also has a set of hinge tools and other hand tools like box cutters and the like. A fluke multi meter lives there as well. Bottom drawer has rags and latex gloves.
One space is reserved. It is the one for the well worn ball peen hammer. "Precision, I has it"
This is the 1% that does 95% of the klanking around.

The big blue box has some of the other stuff like oddball wrenches, home made tools, once in a blue moon stuff, test equp and both the very big and very small of the standard tools. I have other tool boxes that have tools for a set thing like bikes or fine measuring and a box that is just stuff to use when using the shop press.

I also have 2 movable workbenches with vices attached.

Empty spaces due to being in the middle of sorting a 1969 912 that someone made from this and that (some of the this was the front end from a 66 912.....)

The wood shop has an assortment of this format stuff along with all the "other" tools, tool boxes and the like.
