Default Need to upgrade soldering tools

Some good, really good, info from a few years ago about Weller soldering irons here. Whats the current good to very good level unit for general electronics work? What about cordless options? I spent about as much time running an extension cord to do a quick fix on a car today, is there a good option for repairs away from the workbench? Not looking for cheap junk but also dont need clean room, complicated equipment.

Thanks

I've not used a portable unit - I use a Weller (blue) station which is great. But I was intrigued by your question to did a bit of searching. People seem to really like the Pine64 Pinecil, which is only $40 (https://www.amazon.com/PINECIL-Smart.../dp/B096X6SG13). It's not battery - it's USB but will work off a USB power station as well as cigarette lighter adapter and of course a plug-in adapter. Well reviewed, too.

Hard to beat for the money. Have had one for many years without issue. Lots of tips available. Fast heat up and enough grunt to solder automotive wiring shy of the high current stuff. https://www.amazon.com/Hakko-FX888D-.../dp/B00ANZRT4M

Thanks, thats helpful.

Anyone use one of these? I like the idea of using existing batteries, there are options for all major brands.

I have some battery operated ones like posted earlier in the thread out at work. They are great for using inside a bridge console when space is minimal. At home I have a little butane powered one. It has a couple attachments for soldering and using as a heat gun for shrink tube etc. For under $100 its worked fine for my needs.

Follow Kurt's advice with the Hakko. Been repairing PCBs on vintage stereo gear. Temperature control and clean tip = success.

Couple years ago I got a no name (non name brand and a brand I cant remember) cordless that runs on 20v DeWalt batteries. Have used I a few times and it works well.
I think I spent $25 on it. The pen is not as good as the top shelf stuff but it heats quickly and is good for in the paddock or working on the trailer stuff.

Looks about the same as the one pictured but yellow

thanks

Most of my work is on a car, I like the soldering station idea but dont expect it to get much use. Nice to have though.

I had an earlier (let's say 40 years old) version of this Weller https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077JDGY1J...t_details&th=1 that recently got a little flaky with temperature control. Can't complain as it was used heavily. Ordered this one as a replacement and it heats up fast. I prefer the sharper tips for smaller work that I do. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09W9H4GQD...t_details&th=1

I have the Hakko and have a ton of hours on it. Worth every penny.
