MB makes some pretty good stuff. But avoid anything ~1996 through ~2003. Major rust problems due to water based paint switch, and loads of electrical problems.

The newer Bluetec turbo diesels are sexy. So quiet at idle, you'd be hard pressed to tell it's even a diesel. 369 ft/lbs and much better MPG's than any of the gasoline models.

We have two Audi A4s in our driveway. A 99.5 2.8 Quattro 5spd, and my 02 1.8T Avant Quattro 5spd. The 2.8 has 193K miles on it and the 1.8T has 267K miles on it. Both have been good cars. I've put 63K miles on the 02 in two years since it is my primary work car. Only problem I had is the last water pump started leaking prematurely. The 1.8T seems bullet proof. Doesn't burn a drop of oil between changes.

Well I was made a REALLY good offer on a 2002 A6 Quattro wagon ( exactly what I was looking for ) with 115,000 miles and a valve train knock. TOO good of a deal. I did a quick Googling on A6 engine knock and came up with page after page about how the 3.0 engines had a very well known issue of wiping off the cam lobes and destroying the engine from debris. Almost every post I saw stated they heard the noise form the pass rear of the engine. Guess where this cars knocking is.........I think Ill just fix the issues with the Vulva and see if I can get another 300K out of it

All of my best customers (in terms of $$$$$$ spent) drive VW/Audi garbage.

Clarke, a question: What is a better alternative that drives/feels as nice as a VAG car?
My old A4 has been fine, but I don't drive it a whole lot...and it needs new control arms...and a headliner...

Whatever suits you. For every person that hates a brand or model someone else loves it. The Benz wrenches say the 2000 to 2002 MB E class is tops for an older value based on condition type car and to avoid 03 to 07. The 2010 and newer stuff seems to be good too. Lot of folks love Audi, some seem to have opinions that are stronger than the opinion's foundation.
