Most commercial jets have enough rudder power to crab an approach into quite severe crosswind. The moment of truth comes when you kick it straight. At that instant, the crosswind acts to force the upwind wing up. Most commercial jets do not have anything like the aileron power to counteract this effect.

Its this control imbalance that is the big danger. Most pilots can get the aircraft within 10 feet of the centerline in a crosswind that far exceeds their ability [or the aircraft's ability] to get it kicked straight and get the wheels down.

Must have been a hell of a lot of pucker on his second approach for landing in the same cross wind.

I believe the 747's have rear landing gear that will actually turn and line up with the runway durring an extreme yaw rate landing. Once the rear gear touches down both the gear and the rudder act to staighten out the plane before the nose gear touches down.
