Little tidbit:

In the recent Excellence Mag. tech article section it IS recommended that you engage 1st when coming to a stop...as you are rolling to a stop b/c of the constant mesh desgn of the 915 / G50 trannys. It is also recommended that you wait at the light with the clutch in and 1st engaged to keep everything spinning and lessen the wear on 1st synchro / dogs.

Note this is contrary to Wayne's suggestion over on PP that you wait at a light with clutch out and car in neutral to save wear on throw-out bearing.

The Excellence tech advisor suggested saving wear on 1st gear and synchros by not having to bring them up to speed each time you engage 1st after waiting at a light, etc... His recommendation is based ont he fact the replacing throw-out bearings + related is a LOT cheaper than having to crack open the tranny and redo synchros, dogs, etc ...

FWIW

Yup, I read this too, and it makes a lot of sense. That said, I don't feel the need to actually engage 1st when I'm coming to a stop (what I meant about not using the feature), however, once stopped I will engage the clutch for a for at least 10 seconds prior to shifting into 1st. Subtle difference, I know, but same result.

You can always tell a 915 driver by seeing if someone does that. I do that in my Honda and it has *real* synchros in the trans.

OK new day, new attitude but don’t start calling me names but if you do male members are more better And since we’re OT-ing this into a 915 tips; don’t rest your hand on the shifter – ever – it preloads the shift forks and accelerates wear too. Most instructors really don’t like it either

Thanks for the hospitality and tips - looks like a good 915 convo was overdue.

Hate to admit it, but mine is crunchy going into 1st too, unless 2nd is engaged first. My father-in-law rebuilt a few Beetles in his day and regards this as normal operating procedure...apparently not. Slightly discouraging given the green light given to the tranny during the PPI (and the mechanic owns a 79?) The upside is that it seems OK to engage 1st early/leave clutch in, which I wouldn't have dreamed of doing until now.

I'm feeling slightly inadequate if EVERYBODY here is mechanically proficient or deep-pocketed enough to enjoy a crunch-free 1st gear - worth a poll? What would be really great is an estimate of 915 lifetime going forward assuming 150 mi/week in mixed driving...crack it open now or total rebuild later?

swepco and bushings in the meantime, of course (thanks again)
