This is exactly the forum I was hoping to find after taking the Porsche plunge - friendly, informative, and local! Looking forward to many late nights on the laptop trying to figure out the square peg/round hole thing...
Brief intro - picked up a 79 Targa last weekend from a forthcoming and honest private seller in Warrenton. No doubt some of you saw also saw his listing on Craigslist. "Heidi" (after Klum, as suggested by my younger brother) is in good shape minus the few issues identified in the PPI which I've begun to address (corrosion under battery being the most serious). Engine rebuilt a few years back by MotorMeister...keeping my fingers crossed on that one but no problems in the first 10K miles apparently. I'm recently married, new homeowner, VA native (minus a 3yr stint in Jersey). Mechanically inclined but not experienced, eager to screw up a few things on the path to knowledge. Originally a BMW guy, now a hybrid I guess - probably not so uncommon here. Planning on some DE/autocross/rally followed by some more serious track time...but not too serious, at least in a Targa...such is the tradeoff for an open air pleasuremobile to replace the Viggen droptop that is soon to depart. Anyway, it's a pleasure and I'm looking forward to some exhaustive searches of the archives (body shop, remote radar detector install, how to shift the 915, etc..)

Welcome! You are off to a good start - first post introduction including pictures, ready for the track and ready to schedule the first engine drop (or did I read too much into that

Welcome aboard Bentone!
Good looking car. Looks like it was taken care of. As for shifting the 915 - while I don't have any experience with that, the REAC gang here will lead you to believe that you need biceps like Arnold, long, flowing hair like Fabio, and a tan like George Hamilton to be able to shift it properly. From what I've learned, if you just practice without using a gear(preferably 3rd) you should be fine.
