TD's right. Provided you have the space for it, you could buy one of the regular junkers that show up on craigslist all the time. You're not going to get the sweetheart deal TD got on his parts car, but you could do OK...

I am really getting confused here. Yeah,I have the room, given I move the cab from the garage to to a frankenstein scenario, but then I have a lot of material to work with. Why not but a decent trans and roll the dice?

You may be expecting more from the recyclers than what they actually are promising. Most just pull the trans, do some external check to make sure everything turns free. Some might check the drain plug but I doubt it. Usually get a 90 day exchange guarantee but you have to work fast and pay return shipping.
