My favorite comment was when everyone did their introductions and the one guy said, "I drive the M1." Head's snap around and the room goes silent. "Well, the Mach 1" Very funny to yank on the Bimmers

Glad you guys had such a good time, and thanks for sharing your perspectives!

With so many excellent groups in our area, I suppose comparisons and one-upmanship is inevitable. But I personally don't get why it needs to exist -- as long as both groups offer a fun and safe environment in which people can learn to drive their cars better, then that's great! Though this is merely a rose-colored perspective of an ignoramus: one day I'll have the time to expand into other groups and really take stock of what's out there.

I'm supremely appreciative of the number of BMW instructors who enjoy playing with Potomac -- and I would fully expect the same from the Potomac instructors. Had I been aware of the event sooner, I really would've wanted to join in on the fun.

Despite the dangerous runoff, I do really enjoy the new Jeff circuit.

Also, lest anyone get confused, do not follow the line dictated in the sports racer video on page 1. He's all over the place and unfortunately almost couldn't be more wrong if he tried.

Totally agree about the BMW instructors. Yani is one of them that shares his talents between clubs. He treats the entire dry track like his personal skid pad (his words). Just the way he rolls...and I found it quite instructive.

Yeah, that video I posted shows some awful lines. Do not follow.

Now that we know that, edit your post and remove the reference! Or add a comment that it is Collin driving

I think we all agree that the initial video is of some off line session.

Was a great weekend. My body is sore and I have a sunburnt neck. I have some entertaining video, but I need to get time to cut it and upload it.

Roundel: There was quite a debate on the line at the top of Snoopy's Head heading toward the infinity edge at 7. Your video takes a tight Turn 6 and an two apex approach to Turn 7, which about half the group (mostly R-comps) was doing while the other half (mostly street tires) touched Turn 6 curbing twice (early and late over the crest) and then single apexing 7 late as a decreasing radius turn. I didn't get a chance to compare times for each and mostly ran the second option.

Kind of chewing up I Group, aren't you?

Done. I didn't realize I could edit so late.

Ditto on the sore body.

FWIW (not much): I took tight Turn 6 and tight inside Turn 7, on gas a bit into 8 with lift to help rotate to make 8. I am still running street tires.

I can't take 7 as fast doing this but am covering less ground due to the inside line. I tended to gain ground or at least not lose much ground compared to the double apexers on 7. Not sure which is fastest though.

Chewing?

So my line through there and the reasons are as follows:

After 5 throttle until you land after cresting the bump. A touch of brake to settle the car. Way less than one probably thinks. The hill will catch you. (in my video Jason nervously laughs the 1st time I was able to do this because it feels too fast, but the hill caught us) Run up the inside of 6 pretty tight with the intention of getting the nose pointed left a bit. Before cresting the hill, force yourself to add lots of throttle and "jump" over the crest. I like to hear my tires "farting" on the curbing. The goal is to start this little pseudo straight asap by going full throttle before cresting the hill. Stay on the throttle and bend the car toward the left edge of the track entering 7. The goal is to maximize the time on the throttle and then have a straight approach to 7 so you can brake LATE and straight. Brake and again try to brake less than you want to so there is still enough braking needed left to tuck the nose as the radius tightens before 8.

IMO the alternate line that is wider in 6 and 7 does not allow for as much entry speed into 6 or 7. It has more time neither on full throttle nor full brake, and it offers less room to gather up the car before going agrarian if things don't go to plan. I believe that the wider line was the norm last fall, but seems to be loosing popularity.

FWIW I am on Sumitomo Street tires. I think they have 5 weekends on them and a remarkable amount of tread left.

Smell the fart droving. Brilliant!

It wasn't until Yani showed me how much speed you can carry into Turn 6 that I had the cajones to try it myself. That hill is STEEP and catches you way more than you think.

Roundel: Thanks for sharing. Makes perfect sense. The race to the infinity edge of the pool (nothing but blue sky) was a bit intimidating while your line has a lot more queues.
