A smoking deal???!!! A Carrera Targa roller that is tired is worth tops $3500, a G50 with high miles $2k and thats high. When a motor throws a rod, its DONE so its hard to figgure and value there. Where does that leave me....im out somwhere in the neighborhood of 4k based on what I paid and all the cost from all the resulting problems.
I dont know what Eric knew, If you bought a car, drove it 120 miles and the car blew up I think you might be a bit peeved as well. I figgued the motor would need work down the road but I dont even have a rebuildable core . If this were 1, 2, 3, weeks, a month after I bought it Id say that It was poor luck but come on. As to how I was driving, I was dooing tops 80 on I95. I flew up with a plate from one of my other cars and didnt feel like getting pulled over. He rated the motor at 7/10, clearly its not as described. I think that anyone who wasnt his "boy" would agree that there was a falure to deliver as promised, Eric hasnt tried and refuses to do anything to make up for the shortcommings of the car. Im not asking for 4k, in fact I would split the difference with him but he isnt interested in even considereing my offer. Last edited by redducati750; 09-26-2006 at 06:55 PM. |

Sorry to hear about this, not a good situation at all. Thing is, it's now your car.
I dont know either of you. However, I do know that a car sold at a discount to market averages should be examined carefully, or purchased expecting the worst. Unfortunately, the worst occurred sooner than later. Move on

Great pissing match going on here.. Where's the popcorn!
I think that while people do feel some empathy for Redducati, there is perhaps less sympathy. The car ad reads like it was fairly described. 20 year old car with lots of miles. Buy at your own risk. If the diligence wasn't taken to have the car inspected by a reputable shop, shame on you. The days of a "handshake" deal have gone by the wayside in this "internet" world. I'm not sure the tone of this thread is healthy enough that it should be continued, but that is not my call.

Dude,
I can imagine how you feel and you have a right to be upset. I have never met you and I have also never met Eric so my following comments are from a neutral party. I am a wrench, and there are people on the board who will vouch for my credentials. With all thet being said, my responce is as follows. Any underlying cause of a rod that is on the way to failure will make some noise, the type that would scare the crap out of any perspective buyer. Since you heard no noise when you looked at the car,nor was any noise presant during a PPI (I hope you got one) I would feel confident that Eric had no idea of a pending engine failure. I would be interested in seeing a pic of the failed piston. This is a close forum full of good people who like to help if for no other reason than to simply have something to do. Lets let the anger settle down a bit and see if we can get to the bottom of it. It isn't a forum matter but since it has been posted publicly the situation has changed. Good luck and if I can help I would be happy to.

As for the situation at hand, my $.02 is that I'd NEVER consider buying a 20-year-old car without a PPI, but I feel bad for you. My first Porsche was only 4 years old and I paid $$$ for a PPI. But yes, I'd be pissed as h&ll if the engine self-destructed like that. Yet, it's not Eric's fault (to the best of my knowledge), and he sold the car at a steep discount. I was appalled when I saw his price, because I'm thinking about selling my '86 Targa and buying a track car, and I would want about double that for my car. One of the problems with the Internet is that it is such a public place, and people anonymously can post almost any rant against a named person (I don't know Eric, either) with impunity. I sign my posts, and I only rant against certain people in public if it's funny, and never in public if I'm serious.

Fair enough, I know my way around 911s pretty well that a PPI (at that point) seemed unnessessary. However, the car has a premuffler and a straight pipe on from there. If it was making strange noises, they were hidding from my ears by the exhaust set up.
For the reccord, I do not think that Eric knew about the pending doom of the motor, however the car had apparently been in his family for some time and I was given the impression that the car was basically a daily driver. So here is my beef. The car I bought, even though it had high milage was sold as running well. Im not asking for anyone to pay for a complete rebuild but it seems unfair that I should have to eat the costs related to dealing with the cost of a different motor minus the price of scrap aluminum. Most states have a 3 day peroid where any contract can be negated for this reason, Maryland does not. The Point: I think (and I could be wrong) that most of us would try to make things right if you sold a car that blew up 2 hrs down the road. I know I would, I see alot of cars so at the very least I would try to dig up a core motor and contribute that. There is little chance that im gonna see any money from Eric, I called him as soon as this happend as I was still in his neck in the woods. He didnt offer to come get me and never called back to see how I was dooing. Perhaps when his dad hands down the 996 and it eventually gets sold the buyer will stumble across this tread and have more caution than I. |

I ran into a similar situation on my purchase....The battery was a maintance battery and the guy did not replace the caps....Driving down Illinois plus bad instructions from prior owner to stay away from Chicago( trip turned into 26hours instead of 13)...late at night you guessed it…. flashy lights and car running like sh&^ pulled over and sure enough half the battery gone and the positive connector sitting inside the battery...Try getting a battery from a gas station these days plus a terminal connector at 11:30pm....Lucky for me the cashier had a buddy that would sell me a battery at a steep price.2.5 hours later sitting at a closed gas station plus the local cop sitting across the street staring at me not even offering any assistance.. The guy did locate a terminal connector...Only to get back on the road late and next day only to have a piece of tire kick up from the car in front and take out one of my fog lamps....(strike 2) Now I get back to DC and the go to get the car emissions done (Mind you I did not need one… Darn DMV) to have the car completely break down at a p-shop (strike 3)...Lucky me...I needed a fuel accumulator plus misc things at a tune of 1.5k.... Buddy I feel your pain...But no PPI plus an older car SH&^ happens...Take the experience and learn from it...Now you have a nice challenge of doing your first engine drop and getting your hands dirty…
Peace and gl

Scott, thanks. Ive been through roughly 25 911/912s in the last 6 years so it wont be my first engine drop but still not the circumstances that I would want to do a drop under.
