That's amazing for a rust bucket with no drive train. Seems pretty rare, but still, I wouldn't have guessed that kind of money, even for a fully restored one.

Also, how do you shift gears? There's no shifter on the floor, or on the steering column.

What some are willing to pay............. I'm going to go hammer a nail partially...bend it a little while pulling it out...let it weather, tie a little string on it and ebay it for $10,000...because it's art. I remember him - he was very popular on the Annual Washington, DC Civics Trip. I think the guy finally quit cause he got tired of spending so much money handing out campaign literature to teenage boys suddenly interested in how a bill becomes a law.

I think this picture shows that the tunnel was probably modified, and the shifter was probably at the very back of the tranny.

Yep. The Tempest was a rear transaxle car, rather like the current corvette. Looks like a traditional 4 speed was plugged in during its racing career.
