Noah, I suggest a brief exam is in order. How about you come over and repeat the steps of the entire book with my engine? At the end of the process (assuming engine is running smoothly), I'll vouch for your technical knowledge and merit.

Funny!

Thanks Chris!

OK, I know that this is completely stupid, but I am almost giddy about the prospect of tearing this motor apart. I can't wait to understand fully what makes my new car work, and exactly what every little part does. In the future, if I hear a sound or develop a leak, I should be able to make a fairly decent guess as to what might have happened. It should also make things much easier to fix myself once the car is "demystified." Awesome.

Knowledge can be a double edged sword. When you know what the lump is doing and how well it is or is not put together you don't listen to it purr, you listen for and to every little burp, fart and hiccup guessing what parts, of so many to choose from, are about to go south.
So many people look at cars as almost magical machines that are not made of parts but as something more. When you know enough you look at a car as a man made origami of sheet metal made of things bolted together. Nothing more or less than a toaster or washing machine, just bigger and a bit more fun at times. You end up seeing the parts and subsystems more than the car as a whole.
All things just want to return to a 0.0 state. Sand dislikes being piled up and at every opportunity each grain inexorably heads back towards level or 0.0 and so do machines. Only when you can release you mind from the thoughts of failure mechanical or otherwise can you drive well and meld with the car and track.

Welcome to the madness!

I think some of those guys at the track that never open the hood have the right attitude. Ignorance is bliss!!

Very zen response, Kurt. While I'm not in the least mystified by the mechanical complexity of cars, I still have issues reconciling the zen part with my OCD part. But I'm trying.
