I consider that there is nothing wrong with the stock brakes on the SC with good pads, yearly rebuild, ATE Blue/Gold, cooling kit. Carrera brakes are even better with the thicker rotors. People use these brakes in PCA G & F stock classes. I never once touched the bleeders when both Chris and I were driving at VIR, Summit Point, or Mid Ohio. I must admit that I give up something in the Braking zone -- but Chris did not and he practiced thresh-hold braking eveywhere. Before the cooling kit, the pedal would go to the floor when I got in the car after he had driven a session, but one pump and the pedal came back up and I had brakes through out my session.

(S)Mackpipes, something is wrong here. You shouldn't need to rebuild calipers 3/4 times in a couple years. I would guess the only reason to rebuild calipers (again) is if they are leaking or the pistions are dragging.
Probable causes for multiple bleeding sessions, air in lines, old fluid, agressive track brake pads, pistons dragging, no air to rotors, abusing the brakes. Possible solutions, use a Motive power bleeder, use ATE blue fluid, get air to center of rotor, adjust your driving style. If you have the rubber brake lines and don't know the last time they were changed, inspect them very carefully, you may want to change them to be on the safe side. "I'm a chronic late braker" Keep it up and at least the Motive bleeder will make it easier to run thru a $70 liter of Castrol SRF when you boil the fluid. |

Hi Ted: Most of the grease will just fall out since its coated in brake fluid but you will have to clean the caliper with brake cleaner and flush out the line between where you hooked up the grease gun and the piston cavity. You are probably doing this anyway so it doesn't add any extra work.
Vu: Long time no see. Yea, I "lurk" a lot. I work from home so I hop in and read up on what everyone is up to. A good way to learn. Still dreaming of getting a track car someday and want to know what I will be getting myself into Mike

While it may be a money issue (when isn't it?) If you're going to be running 17" wheels, why not just do the right thing and get some BMF brakes? (You don't need big reds, per se, but maybe some 930 brakes, or 964 size brakes? Then you will only have to change pads once a year when you flush your fluid :P
Besides, with those big 17"s stock brakes are gonna look awfully teeny

Ted,
You might think about getting a pair of 964/944 Turbo front calipers. You can run 28mm rotors (versus 24mm Carrera rotors), and you don't have to touch the rear calipers. I'm working on a way to install mine without spending the big bucks -- a guy on Pelican is having some custom hats made so that Acura NSX front rotors can be used (high quality, cheap price). I've spent hours upon hours reading up on brake mods on Pelican, and from what the experts say, it's not time or money well spent to continue fiddling with stock 3.2 brakes. Bill Verburg and Steve Weiner both have said that aside from the mid-1970's 930, the 3.2 Carreras are the most underbraked 911 Porsche ever made. It might be time to step up. |
