I agree with everything said so far. One thing to mention is the lost art of hammer welding with a gas torch.
I have been practicing with my Oxy/acetylene and getting much better results than my MIG. This technique only works when you have access to the backside of the panel, ie welding flares. I bought a jeweler's torch and it has a very small precise flame, similar to Tig arc. the idea is to weld a short bead and then hammer the weld on a dolley while its still hot. This removes distortion and keeps the gap consistant. It also flattens out the weld bead leaving minimal finish work. I really mean minimal when done right, as in no finish work except cleaning the surface. Best of luck on the learning curve. Practice, practice, practice! go get a book or video to help it out.
