Consider the econimics at play here, though. He's looking for something for his 996TT. Something tells me he not a member of the "low rollers" club like us .

If you're looking at the Techquipment (sp?) stuff, you may as well see what RUF has to offer. Their bars, though, are very nicely integrated into the interior. Based on the pics that I've seen, you can hardly tell that there's a bar there. While it likely won't pass PCA Club racing rules, I suppose it should do the trick for DE.

Just because I have a TT don't think I'm Mr. Money Bags. My "OTHER CAR" is a 91 escort station wagon. I like a good deal just like everyone else.

Thanks for the tips on where else to look. I will go by the folks at OG and see what they have. I mentioned the Tequipment because that is what I have seen. I'm looking for a bar that is not to obtrusive that will add a little more margin of safety for track events. More to get my wife off my back than anything else.

I'm not looking for a full cage because after putting a full cage (8 point) in a Corvette that I had I don't want to live with it every day. Installation I'm hoping will not require me to tear up the interior of my car and not require a PHD to figure out.

Again thanks for the pointers on where to look!

(Caution. Warning. Take note, Opinion to follow)

Overall 911s are hard to crush and a bar (not a cage) might only improve overall safety in a 50/50 or better track driven car. A cage should be reserved for primarly track driven cars set up with 5 or 6 point systems. Driving a car with a cage, no helmet on and a 3 point on the street you are more likely to get hurt in an impact. That is why I think bars in street cars are less safe as you have added something real hard to hit yout head on. You are far more likely to wreck and hit your head than have a driver compartment crushing event.

I think I just saw a TE bar for a 996 at Rennlist.

Great point- hence the reason I'd like a bolt-in solution.

Kurt is right on. "Safety" equipment is part of a system.Individual parts are often way more dangerous without the system working together.Roll bars need helmets, seats and harnesses. Look up pictures of Porsches that have turned turtle a couple of times and the roof line rarely moves that much. I could be wrong, but I believe in most states, harnesses are illegal as they are not DOT approved for road use. Imagine doing flips with your torso held firm and your head without a helmet flopping around like a rag doll.

All the advice I got when I asked around was the same as what Kurt and Dirk have said. And it makes perfect sense.

Literally the only time my car is on the street any more is on the way to the track, returning from the track, or going to get inspected. But my thought process was something like this:

1.) I need to get harnesses because I'm sick of having to put my left knee up against the door.

2.) Harnesses dont' seem very safe on the stock seats, so I need to get new seats.

3.) If my torso is going to be more "fixed" with one piece seats and harnesses, I might as well add a little rollover protection since I need something to attach those harnesses to any way.

And then all three pieces (seats, harnesses and bar) went in the same day. But rollover protection wasn't the primary driver.

Couple notes about the DAS: You don't need to tear up the interior, but you do need to remove one section of insulation/carpeting between the shock mounts which you cannot replace unless you cut it. I just left mine out. The piece I'm talking about pops right out and could easily be replaced intact after I remove the bar.

There is enough effort involved in installation that I don't think this is something I would want to remove between events. I do, however, like that I can return the car to stock without any scars when I want to sell it.

And no, you can't use the harnesses in VA on the street. So you do have to leave the stock seat belts functional. Which you'll want to do any way to avoid leaving the SRS light on.

HTH Gunther. Let me know if you want to see the DAS bar in my car. The one for the widebodies is only slightly different.

This one has me thinking now. I had previously just wanted a harness bar for my SC. But several who have chimed in here told me to absolutely get a roll bar. I don't want to go as far as a cage. I'll still drive my SC on the street on weekends (when the 993 is down for mods and I'll probably never do more than 10-12 track days in the SC in a year. So what should I do" Roll or harness bar?

Roll bar, RL. I had a harness bar first and then moved to the roll bar. Save yourself a step. Take a look at mine if you want to. It's the DAS, which ain't cheap but seems very solid.

That said, I probably will be taking it out and selling it once I get the '71 in shape for the track. "That early car,'' as my wife keeps saying, ever since Pari explained the concept to her.
