Here's a prime example of why we wear seatbelts:
http://www.sccaracer.com/ThisIsGonnaHurt.wmv I have no idea what country this was filmed in. Care to speculate? Cheers, Rich |

Here's a bit more video of the Ferrari after the fire is put out and the driver is pulled from the car.
http://members.roadfly.org/dakar2m/aftermath2.mpeg Pretty grusome. I can't believe the safety guy just leaves the driver to flop around on the ground... it appears that he wants to get his helmet off because it is either still very hot and burning him more or that it is making it difficult to breathe. Nasty. Do most race cars have in-car fire supression systems? If so, would one have helped the Ferrari driver avoid the serious burns he sufferred?

John, most cars do have on-board fire systems, but you have to be able to pull the safety pin (if not done at the start of the race) and then push/pull the button to activate it. If your not awake, there isn't any remote way to set it off. That's why we depend on the safety crew and their fast response. Rich

Doubt if the firesystems we use would have done much/anything for the Ferrari. Perhaps.
I wonder if in fact the worker was surprised that the driver got up at all. He probably exected him to be inert and was leaving him for the medics who presumably have training to decide how much to disturb the injured. |

My fire system in my '14/6 has spray nozzles above the fuel tank, in the cockpit just below the dash scuttle and above the carbs. One has to hope that if it ever needs to be used I or someone close enough will hit the button.
