Hey gang:

Took a while to get back home last night b/c of some @#$%^ Brooks & Dunn concert out on / near 29 ... man what a PITA.

We had a GREAT weekend and a not-so-great weekend. All cars came back without any damage. I had a couple of half-offs and Jim had some full-offs (hogpen was oiled down a few times so ... made it even a little harrier at speed). I decided to do a Tony and really f@#$ed up Nascar a few times ... much to the delight of the restaurant crowd. I think they were holding up scorecards

Where to start ....

Here are the cars looking all pretty...

and an artistic "nose" shot... [one of my favorites]

Here is the fastest car at the event:

1998 F1 beneton ... how does 1:36 times grab you For reference, our '74 ran 2:06, the '66 ran 2:22 and the 356 ran 2:33s. It was incredible listening to this thing from the pits as it roared down the back stretch It SPANKED the champ cars, can-am, F3000, etc... cars in its class. Must be LOTS of fun running by yourself out there in front ....[yawn].

Jim running the '74 with some big modern Trans Am muscle:

And I thought the old GT350s were loud in the braking zone (blips) The group 6 muscle car race saw one of the blue / yellow Donahue '68 cameros crunch a front end, rip the wheel off, etc... Driver got suspended ... loose nut behind the wheel diagnosed.

This was a qualifying race (Jim or me ... don't remember) and we were tussling with a VERY quick BMW 2002 and an Alfa (not in picture). Most of our competitors were running 6s and 7s (225 out back), we ran 6s all around with 205/50s. Let me tell you ... the esses are NOT fun with that weight and no rubber on the back end. Front and back straight I was turning around 8K rpm about 137-140mph indicated (who knows really ....)

Here is a shot of the qualifying race. Got stuck behind a slower Alfa and in front of that 2002 and a pinto who later qualified (2.4L big rubber) at almost the exact same time as the '66. Jim ran against the Pinto in the sprint race on Sat and got by hime on the last or 2nd to last lap going into T1.

Discovered this when '66 got up to speed on the back striaght. I guess Jim was jumping to many curbs tooling around on the street before the weekend.

This was a new(ish) Toyo Proxe RA-1 205/50/15. Bent the reinforced sidewalls. Doesn't just happen to low profile street rubber.

Jim got 3rd overall in the 60 minute enduro and I was .... way down in the order in the '66. I think I was around 5th or 6th in my class.

Yes, in case you were wondering, I had several opportunities (and took at least one) to give Jim the signature "Dorki passing signal" as he lapped me with the leaders.

Here is Henry Payne in his long tail. His son was running a 908/2 (thread and photos over on PP BBS):

Unfortunately, I think the "mystery" 3.4L in the '74 went home with some bent valves (to be diagnosed later). The '66 and '62 ran like champs. Last race of the season for the '62 so I think motor and tranny are coming out for "servicing".

Lest you think we only worked on Porsches, Audis, GMC, and BMW...

Nice when your rental comes with it's very own sheet metal screw in the tire. (seen at the 12:00 position).

All in all a great weekend. Got some trophys, broke some stuff, no crashes ... met some great racers and fans and had some good, clean running with a whole hoast of non-P cars (including a lotus 7 that I "swear I didn't see" going into Nascar .... )

One more artistic shot:

Thanks for the bandwidth.

Jase

Aaww, this is some great stuff, Jase! I really wished I could've been there. I would really love to be one of your pit flunkies during one of these vintage events.

Great pics and color commentary.

Outstanding stuff, Jase.

Good to hear that you & Jimmy gave Greg a relatively quiet weekend! Great pics, as usual. That Beneton car must have been something to see & hear. Amazing!

Many thanks for the report & pics.

Scr#w that ... get out there with your 2.7RS'd 911 and go spank 'em with the 210! I know you'd appreciate some of the BIG $ cars that were floating around the paddock. The 908/2 and the 907LH are beautiful to look at as well as the '60s trans am muscle cars and the Can am cars.

Next year tentatively looks like HSR Sebring in spring, J500, Blue / Grey, HSR Zippo at the Glen in Aug / Sept. and the SVRA @ VIR Oct. event again. All subject to change of course 8)
