PLUS mode bundles sharper throttle response which is achieved by advancing the throttle plate angle. For example, in PLUS mode the driver pushing the gas pedal 30% will achieve 60% throttle opening at the engine. Basically full throttle opening at the engine is achieved with 50 to 60% at the pedal. This is why it can feel abrupt when using the throttle to balance the car in PLUS mode. Why was it designed this way? Probably to impress a potential car buyer on the first test drive...like damn this car feels fast at only half throttle I'll buy it now!

I would be nice to have factory PDK PLUS mode without the engine throttle advance feature bundled with it. No worries though, aftermarket has a solution COBB Accessport allow tweaking of shift points and throttle sensitivity.
Wanted to add that an advanced level driver should be able to adapt to the change in throttle resolution in PLUS mode changing feed rate input. For beginner level probably best to use SPORT mode. Just my opinion.

and stiffer suspension setup and stickier tires can mask the affects of throttle abruptness to some degree.

PDK S is already “Motorsport calibrated” so you don’t need the PLUS.

Thanks for all the help, folks. I’ll let the car shift for me next time I’m on the track. I’ll be participating as a novice at the next autocross in Bowie. This is one less thing I have to worry about.

The PDK usually works fine for autocross, which you generally want to run in second gear. On some courses, it's useful to use the paddle-shifters in autocross, but I wouldn't worry about it right now.

I've been a long time complainer about throttle response being packaged with stability limits. Counter intuitive to put more responsibility on the driver but make it more difficult for the driver to balance the car with the throttle. With some modern cars even in regular modes the throttle response is annoying. In my low torque FRS, turn 2 of the WRC portion of my commute includes a mid corner brake to throttle transition that I try to make quick and extra smooth. So much more difficult because that initial touch of the throttle gives such a huge amount of available power. Heel toe is much easier though.

My wife's mazda 3 is so much easier to be smooth on throttle, but with its grabby brakes and slower throttle response heel toe "at least with light street paced braking" is hugely difficult.
