Take meticulous care of the humidifier They can do good or harm depending on how well cared for they are. Super dry winter air is not good for you.

I heat the house with a woodstove. We had a few days this year that required the oil burner, my house layout isnt ideal for my stove setup. After being away from home during the ~10deg days I needed the central heat until the stove could get cooking.

I havent touched the thing, I really dont know if it works or not. I picked up a few small portable humidifiers this winter. A little tedious filling them with water but they work and my hands arent as crusty as usual.

Had a humidifier leak earlier in the winter so I disabled it until I could troubleshoot/ fix. Man, did that wreak havoc with some of the wood trim and flooring! A new filter and a cleaning took care of the leak. I had no clue about the needed maintenance, and none of the HVAC servicing I'd had done over the years included anyone opening up the unit. Until it started leaking I had no clue about the opening it up, performing maintenance, etc. Kinda like the condensate pump that no one looked at/ serviced for years until it stopped working and I had to troubleshoot. Seems like the typical once-a-year servicing by the HVAC guys often is just cleaning filters, vacuuming coils and cleaning out the exterior unit.

I have an air mover-mounted humidifier and absolutely love it. I have humidity gauges at various locations around the house to help ensure I'm in the range. I am very sensitive to the low-humidity winter air and this sucker was a godsend. The little portable jobbies just couldn't keep up.
