Using the clay bar requires very little pressure. You just glide it over the surface. It's very easy to use. I was a bit weary at first too, but it's so safe.

To make you feel better, try it on a discrete area of the car initially.

I own a 71 Mercedes 280SL and recently used a clay bar for the first time with amazing results.

The clay bar is not like a rubbing compound in that it does not remove paint. It simply removes dirt that is stuck to the car's finish.

A great resource is Griot's Garage where I bought mine. The process is: wash the car, clay the car, (optional polish), and wax.

The clay comes in a bar about the size of a bar of soap. You spray the car surface with a solution provided and gently rub the clay back and forth against the paint surface. It takes very little pressure, and only four or five passes before the paint surface goes from "pretty smooth" to "wow, that's really smooth".

The clay gets dirty -- even after using it on a freshly washed car -- but it doesn't pick up the color of the paint.

I've used Mother's, and had great results. Just have to keep it wet with the spray that comes with the clay bar. You'll have to just try it, and the method will come.
I recieved a car, that had overspray paint specs all over it. The clay bar was able to remove ALL specs, w/o any of the cars paint! When i had tried car wax, it would just push the specs into the paint, while also removing some of the car's paint!

whoever thought up the clay bar was a clever SOB, because you just don't think it will work, until you try it.
