I use the same single e-z pass when towing and not. VA, MD, PA, NJ, DE, NY, don't matter.

Might be best to get two so the trip to VIR is simpler on the powhite. Shame you just can't get one for the truck and another for the trailer.
My bills say they do. Also, it is not as if they pull you over or flash you a red light as you go through . . .

I've had a few different experiences with this. My buddy and I have towed boats and car trailers with plenty of success. However, one time I borrowed my friend's trailer to tow my motorcycle and a few weeks later he received a notice from ez-pass with the fine for the trailer. My car got charged the standard rate on my ez-pass. No system is perfect, but I would say most of the time its worked fine for a trailer.

There is this guy I know that pulls a trailer throught the EZ pass lanes for the dulles toll road and the Greenway and never gets hit for the trailer. He stopped the first time and the guy in the booth asked him why he stopped as his EZ pas was just recorded. The driver said somthing about the trailer and the toll troll waved him through with a laugh.

From ezpass.com FAQ:

I sometimes pull a camper or trailer with my vehicle. Can I still use my tag?

Yes. In this instance the equipment in the lane is designed to identify that your vehicle is pulling a trailer and you will be charged accordingly. However, if you think this will be a regular occurrence, you should call the Customer Service Center and have them send you a tag programmed for the vehicle classification you use most frequently. You should never use your tag in a vehicle type other than the one you initially requested (i.e. Car tag in a tractor-trailer).

I never knew that! Hell for the past 14 years I've been towing my dual axle box to SP using the pass I got for my PU. Never had an issue. Now I can't claim ignorance anymore.

There is a much better way around Richmond than Powhite. I can't remember off the top of my head...getting old.
