The shop in PA is Willow Grove Auto Top. It's near my wife's family abode, and they advertise in Pano. But if a dorki is willing to help (how do you sew it back together?)...

Bill,

It sounds like the glue is shot. The foam backing on the headliner is likely rotten as well. I don't recall any foam on the outer liner so that may still be good to reglue.

This is a real easy fix to DIY. With all you do on your Pcars you'll find this a piece of cake. I had no instructions when I did mine. I just took the top off, looked at all the screws and said 'He!! I can take it apart and TRY to put it back together, worst case is I can send it to someone in a box to finish for me'. As it turned out the targa top looked fine after I was done. There is no sewing involved, only gluing.

Give it a Dorki try.

If you can stretch canvas on a frame, you can do this. The only issue is to make sure all the hardware is in good condition. If there is no rust and little wear, you are in great shape. After rebuilding a 911 engine, this is a no-brainer!

I'd recommend soaking the screws in PB blaster or equal overnight to help in removal. The ones on mine had some rust and needed to be 'helped' off with an 'impact' screw driver (the kind you hit with a hammer) to get unfrozen. No real problem though.

Thanks all.
Rich that link is pretty good in showing what is there. As I suspected there is foam below the outer skin. I guess it's only glued around the edges.
Now that I understand, I think the skin is just relaxed over the years and I can't pull it tighter (fron to rear) because of the binding on the ends.
I think I just need to live with it and maybe replace the skin as another of those winter projects.
The headliner is perfect so is the skin really only $70? when was that written?

Thanks again!

I had the same situation on my targa. I just re-stretched (tightened) the skin and was good to go. Just remove the top, partially fold the top, remove one side, tighten and screw it back together. It may take some adjusting to get the right tension but is easy to do.

Good luck!

Sounds like a good quick and best of all free solution
I didn't know that the side edges were not glued. That's key!
When you tightened the side did you end up getting any wrinkles at the front and rear corners?
I'ms just wondering if I should maybe un-glue the 1st 4-6" of the front and rear edge so that I can streach the front and rear edges as I pull the sides tight?
Thanks alot!

no wrinkles at all. I don't recall if there were any screws on the front or rear edges. I didn't have to take up too much slack on mine but I'm sure I would've loosened any and all screws in order to tighten it up. Once you start pulling it apart you'll see how easy it is.

Okay, fixing my Targa billowing is the one thing I really want to do before Watkins Glen. Who wants to help me? Who has experience in this? (hopefully, the same person for both questions).
