Most sanctioning bodies require the "good stuff" and will fail you at annual tech for the "soft padding".

You can also consider homologated seat mount and sliders instead of seat back brace.
Check with the org you are going to run with ... seat back braces are req'd for most caged cars.

ALL require SFI rated padding, including the DE tech guys.

FIA certified composit seats are only good for 5 years. If you want to keep it longer, then must have a brace. Therefore, I decided to go with a non-FIA seat with brace cause I'm cheap.

Plan to use SFI padding (since I'll be driving to the track, I'll use the Dual Durometer padding for the close ones, which has a firm low-profile SFI padding and a removable much softer cover: http://www.ogracing.com/catalog/2-Ca...LL-BAR-PADDING). This is much softer than the steel bars at the edges of my Targa top, and not much closer to my head. Also, I had to remove the 3-points for proper roll cage placement, so I'll be driving with harnesses (and take my chances with the law).

Agree on the seat brace, plus the Kirkey was the only one I fit in...

No it won't. He lives in MD. There is no safety inspection, ever, unless the vehicle changes hands.

Wow, I didn't know that.

You mention 'unless the vehicle changes hands'. Does this mean a car that was recently purchased needs a one time inspection?

Edit: From the mva.maryland.gov website "Used vehicles must be safety inspected before they can be registered by the MVA."

Edit #2 from MD inspection list: 21. INSPECT SAFETY BELTS FOR: (A) PRESENCE, CONDITION AND OPERATION AND MOUNTING

Yep -- you get it inspected when you buy/ register it. after that, no need for annual safety inspections. DC is moving to the same system. maybe one day Virginia will follow.

FWIW, studies have been conducted that show MD cars are no more likely to break down on the highways then VA cars.

Hopefully Dr K. already registered the car and had it inspected.
