I just noticed while not looking directly at the crash...that TV camera right next to the crash was panning and recording the whole crash at very close range.
Wonder where that footage is?

That canopy cockpit looks hideous to me. I'm with Dirk in that we already have enclosed F1 cars.. they are LMP cars! One of the shocking items of Bianchi's impact was watching how his car came right in, and the went under the crane, lifting the crane in the process. Cranes gotta be what, 3-4 tons?. On the one hand it was horrific to watch, but imagine if Sutil's car was 15 feet farther back (where the crane was) and Bianchi were to have hit him instead. I chalk it up to a bad accident. Half would have wondered why it would take a lap to get the crane to the Sauber and remove it.. others now wish there was more time spent getting a crane in place. Its also interesting there were no rumblings (that I have read/heard) about any issues with Bianchi's line (ie, was he using Riccardos wide line and lost control? brake issues? or just simply too fast for conditions). I was surprised (and a little saddened) to learn that Bianchi's Grandfather and uncle, if I recall correctly, both died in racing accidents. His father gave up racing in part because of the family pain associated with racing.

Ummmm....I'm gonna guess closer to 10x that estimate. Probably somewhere around 25-30,000 lbs. Heck.....my Suburban alone weighs in at over 7,000 lbs.
Here's a spec sheet on a similar reach forklift. You need a lot of weight to counter what's being handled on the end of the forklift. http://www.ritchiespecs.com/specific...&modelid=97620 The energy levels involved to make the forklift jump up like that are frightening....

Side Skirts on the rescue vehicles that prevent anything other than a flat surface all the way down to within a couple of inches of the ground. a simple solution for this which would have likely prevented the loss of Vollata's eye last year as well

side skirts on the crane would have meant a dead stop for Bianchis car. Not having the skirts did allow the car to lose momentum before coming to a dead stop, possibly saving his life ?? Then there's the touchy ethical/moral/religious/political/psuedo medical/I'm right you're wrong go to hell debate whether or not he would be better off had there been skirts on it

those are have been very well engineered for the body to absorb impacts and by the looks of the footage i have seen it was not completely head on (no pun intended) which would have allowed some of the crash structure to absorb the impact...not his head
just a thought - not attached to it

FP1 was a bit hard to watch. Excepting in car footage it was hard to see the flow of the race. Not many places where the cameras can follow for even a second. Like Singapore although not a city track.

the really long camera angles and wide track really take away the dynamics for TV. they did a really nice job at Suzuka this year with some new camera angles that highlighted the speed and agility.
