The difference between MD and VA (other than their ridiculous property tax on cars) is the phrase in red below:
A vehicle registered as historic cannot be used for general daily transportation, or primarily for the transportation of passengers or property on highways. It can only be used in exhibitions, club activities, parades, tours, occasional transportation and similar uses. A trailer does not qualify for historic registration.
So long as you have another car that is considered your "general daily transportation" you can drive the car to work or a vacation (or the track!).

Maybe I should just do it. I bet I have driven it to work fewer than 15 times in 8 years.

Ive got my scirocco and 190 both tagged as historic. Ive had 3 other cars tagged as historic. and I am moving the 993 to historic reg this year

never once have I had an issue with any of them (Ive always had a primary vehicle)

fun fact with the cars over 25 years - "Vintage tags" - if you track down a tag from the year of the car you can use it as your tag (just keep the normal historic tags in the car)

I have a year tag on my 356 and have one for my 914 when I update the registration upon completion (1973 was the last year tag in VA)

Hmmm....I was thinking about getting a vintage license plate for my 89 944S2. Except that Maryland has been using the same tag since 1986! The only difference are the registration stickers.

Dont know if the old-style while.black ones got carried through (with people re-stickering them) until 89, but having an old tag with the expired reg sticker from the year works as well (doesnt need to be the stamped metal with exp. date)
