What Tony suggested is probably the right thing to do if you want to drive the car, before MD will give you a temp. registration you will have to have insurance, title, proof of purchase (notorized if you're trying to get over on paying tax for the car), etc... The way I would handle it would be to just pony up the cash and have the car transported back to MD once the transaction has been completed. I definitely would under no circumstances put the truck tags on it, RT 95 just presents too many unnecessary risks. The little bit of money you will spend to do get your car back to MD is nowhere near the penalty you will pay by trying to save a few cents. Good luck!

i suppose as long as i am insured (already followed up on that) i will be okay. it really is ridiculous that Md. doesn't have a system for getting out of state cars back in via some method other than trailer. i REALLY don't want to drive TO Ga. in my Tundra w/ a 2000lb trailer on the back.
I'd forgotten about the Historic Tag route (car must be over 25 years old). Seems without inspection, all you need is the vehicle's title, and you can get your permanent tags at the MVA. Have the seller send the title to you via appropriate mail, arrange for temp storage of the car till you get down there, and make sure it has insurance coverage. You'll get your tags on the spot at MVA, and then you can go down to GA, put the tags on and legally drive it back.

As Michael mentioned, MVA will require 5% tax based upon NADA book range of values. If actual sale price is significantly below that value, you will need a notarized bill of sale in order to pay the lesser tax. My guess is the NADA value is probably less than its true market value. You may be able to call and confirm the value range with MVA beforehand to determine if a notarized document is necessary. If notarized is needed, prep a bill of sale with seller, have them sign first with notorarized stamp of their signature, then send to you with the title. You get your signature notarized up here, then take bill of sale and title to MVA.

you guys are probably correct but i was really trying to avoid having to fly a second time. Also don't intend to buy the car without actually being there to drive and see it. i could rely solely on the PPI but that's just too big a risk for me.

perhaps i could keep the Ga tags on it and leave the guy a sizeable deposit to be refunded when i mail the tags back to him. that might work out nicely.

Use the Tundra tags. You probably wouldn't be buying a Porsche if you didn't enjoy some level of risk. Driving with illegal tags makes the risk so much more immediate; you'll really know you're alive. Of course, if you stay within the law, the chances of getting pulled over in the million-vehicle traffic stream on 95 are essentially nil, so you'll want to be doing at least 15 over the posted limit to make the risk meaningful.

berettafan,

So you have called both Maryland and Georgia, and neither state can offer a way for you to get temporary tags to drive a newly purchased car from one state to the other?

Seems crazy.

I better see your issue now. I know at one time, used car dealers and even some repair & body shops used to have "Transportation" tags, they could use to drive a car temporarily. Maybe try calling some local shops & dealers to see if something is available you could borrow or "rent" for a fee. Maybe the same shop/dealer that will ultimately do the MD Inspection.

Otherwise, maybe writeup an agreement where the seller lets you borrow his tags, you provide the insurance, and he holds the signed title until you mail his tags back, or maybe a deposit as you suggest. A lot depends on trust between the parties.

Good luck. I'm sure something will work out.

I've seen this happen when a guy from CO bought our hotrod Syncro. CO didn't offer tags without the title. Virginia only offered temp tags to VA residents. I loaned the guy my tags and he fedex'd them back. There's risk there - if he does anything wrong you can get the ticket.

I've done it all, I think - plate-less, other car plates, temp tags, seller's plates. Plate-less is most exciting, especially in a fast loud car

Next time I have to do this I'd check to ensure 100% that my insurance covered a purchased car as the deal is done and then drive home plate-less & hope that the "just bought it but it's insured" works better on a cop than explaining why my plates are for another car.

Ed i like your thinking. Cliff thank you for the laugh; i needed it.

PPI came back less than perfect. Car needs a front pan and there are minor oil leaks (return tubes & chain covers) and carbs need tuning. Mech. can't verify high compression S spec motor as he says carbs are kashmitzed and need lovin'. He described it as feeling like it was running on 5 cylinders.

Sooooo, none of this tag b.s. matters now. But the price came down $2k to allow for pan replacement! I think i am going to fly down in a coupla wks and take the car myself to the shop to a)verify S cams & maybe verify S heads w/o dropping the motor and b)review rust problem with body guy and c)pay for carb lovin'.

At this point, if i am satisfied i have a solid motor and $2k fixes the rust issue then i will buy the car, bring the title back and have Dieter & friends do their magic. Once they are done i will fly back down AGAIN and pick the car up with my new tags.

the really bad news here is that i am very much afraid of heights and hate to fly. hoy the things we do for love.

the good news is it looks to be a bit more solid than }{'s car at the moment...

Replaced the “pan” on our ’71 this year ~$2,500 form Karosserie in Merrifield. Very nice work.
