I didn't want to hijack Chris's thread, so I figured we continue the discussion of detectors here. I am in the market for a radar detector, but I don't really have to worry too much about getting it confiscated since I am in MD. Although, I do spend alot of time in NoVa. I am still debating between the Passport 8500 or the V1. After getting hit with laser a few months ago, I am now considering the passport. Before I had my mind made up on the V1. Does anyone have the V1 setup in their p-car?
Some on the Pelican board swear by the V1, while others have faith in the passport: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showt...hreadid=156112 |

I'm in the V1 camp. The final straw for me was seeing the ebay prices for used V1's. You can use it for a couple years and then sell it at ~85% of what you paid.

V1 rules. It paid for itself on the New England trip Lu and I took in the 993 luxury cruiser. We don't have it permanently wired in, since we NEVER use it in VA.

Hypothetically speaking, you could place it just above your state inspection sticker on the windshield, then use the cig lighter adapter. Easy install, easy de-install. This is what I would do when I'm traveling OUTSIDE the Commonwealth. 8)

Get the V1. That's what I use on trips outside VA.
As for laser, the sad fact is that once any detector tells you you've been hit with it, it's probably too late. - Bill |

Another V1 supporter here. As Jim said, positioning it low on the windshield near or behind the VA state inspection stickers keeps it mostly out of sight. I've been planning to hardwire mine for a while but had too many projects that are higher on the importance scale. I have been caught with it in the commonwealth, but wasn't using it. It was actually in my glove box when I was stopped for -other- reasons. Ding ding...and this lucky winner gets an extra ticket!

I've had a V1 for several years. When in VA I plug it in and set it on the seat and it's surprising how well it works. For whatever reason the police seem to sit around a curve, on the side of the road (or behind a billboard
I'd buy another V1 if I was looking at detectors. |

I quit using a passport a couple of years ago, just sent $155 to NY state for 77 in a 55. I am ordering one for when I travel as I would never use one locally
