United Auto bought HBL some years ago and it has been a good thing so far from my view. UA is big on going long. (I work for HBL but not in an automotive capacity) Latest equipment and training and everything was rebuilt top to bottom. Some long time mechanics and some new guys. Chris at IMA got the above mentioned training at HBL. On the other site when asked as tech chair I recommend shops by location. Here, I am not at work for the club, ever.
The statement that we are blessed with many good shops is spot on. Almost too many. They all have strengths and weakness. One mans best ever is another’s worse ever depending on the day and job.
We have one man shops, shops that have 4 mechanics to shops that have 4 locations. There is even a spread in the dealers to work with. Tisher in MD is a dealer that has a service manager that is also a club racer, understands the needs of a track car and is club friendly. Tom hosts a great DE tech each year. HBL has hosted the new member parties for years as well.

Call and talk to the shop. Visit the shop and don't hesitate to ask questions. A good relationship with a good shop is well worth the inital investgation.

Overall it is hard to go real wrong. I would start with a map if I was ever to use a shop.

I agree with the others, we have many goods shops around here. I personally have used ASG for the past 10 years.

ASG knows the newer cars and has the factory PST, special tools, etc. to work on them. They have been doing all of the service and repairs on my 996 since 2001.

I have taken my car to HBL for recalls and service campaigns issued by Porsche.

no your not How about setting up a drive and arive visit? Contact Porsche club and see if there is a group in your area that you can get involved with. Clean up the shop some and throw down for some eats. C-vill is a bit of a drive for a new set of pads and a brake fluid flush. A 911 motor rebuild that is well done, well priced and completed on time OTOH would be well worth it. Chiming in here with tips is good stuff BTW. Some shops might think you are giving away the goods but many P car owners look at it a good will building. DIY guys use shops too. You might loose some pad swaps or even a clutch replacment but you will get good will for the big stuff.

Giving away the goods (from my standpoint) is a joke. I work for my boss, and I do as I am asked. I offer my advice, my will, and my skill, and I am compensated for it. It is busness.
Here I help where I can and I am giving nothing away. When I hit the timeclock everything I walk out with is mine and mine alone. If I chose to share, the "shop" has nothing to do with it, It ain't busness. Besides I take more from here than I give, Trust me.
