I was wondering if any of you have been through the VA inspection process with a car that has a mostly gutted interior. In looking at the State Police inspection process my car meets most of the criteria but is questionable in others.
I have no passenger seat or no interior really to speak of. Door panels are on though. All of the mechanical things they are looking for a I have except not sure about wiper/defroster. I have no ventilation/blowers and was wondering if that was an either or? Everything else should check out ok... Thanks - -Jeff

Get an AC inverter ($20 at Walmart) and a cheap hairdryer. Racing tape to the dash, and you're done!

Get a defroster at:
http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/P...002304/c-10101 As for passenger seat, interior, etc - they are not required. Just make sure any holes in the floor for harnesses, ballast, etc are sealed (I put bolts in mine with big washers) as any light that shows through will be immediately apparent if you don't have carpet. Also, make sure that there are no exhaust leaks as track exhausts attract attention. Shop can't check for loudness, but they can fail you for leaks and/or no cat. Technically, the code says that exhaust "clamps" are not allowed to connect sections of exhaust, but that would be nit picking. Also, if you are running track tires/wheels - you may want to borrow a set of street tires from a friend just for the inspection. While hoosiers are DOT legal, it's probably not worth arguing that with the inspection guy at the local garage

Also - you'll need to have your factory 3 point belts in place. Odds are they won't delve into that, but technically they need to be mounted in the "factory location". Not sure where they are in a 911, but in the 944 they mount to the tunnel. As this was taken over by my 5 point mounts, we had to fab something to the sparco mounts. However, I'm also sure that no inspector has every really looked at where a mount point is for a porsche seat belt.
---edit They will check your wipers to make sure they work

While my interior is not "gutted" I did have to fix my front blower (vent/dash air) to pass VA Safety inspection.

There used to be a couple of lax inspection stations here in Alexandria, but the last time I went through them the inspectors were more thorough. But I don't think either of them tested the defroster. My Targa did fail for that the first year I owned it, though...

You should make sure you have working wipers.

I'm an inspector, I will address the issues as best I can for ya.
1 defroster must blow a warm stream of air to the windshield 2 Wipers must be as installed by the factory. You need both 3 seats, you only need one but as stated before plug the bolt holes. Rubber plugs will work if you like 4 seat belt. The only aftermarket belts I am aware of that will pass are the Schroth. I would recomend the factory belts. You must have a belt for every seat. 5 door panels can be removed but you must have opening devices on the inside and outside of each door. Rear dors don't count but this is a Porsche , we don't have those. 6 Hoosiers are leagal as long as they have DOT #'s and at least 2/23 tread depth. I hope this helps If you have any spesific questions I can answer for you shoot me a PM.

What Rich said but; never had an inspector check blower, but always had the controls for them to gaze at. No back seats, rear deck cover, carpets, door pockets, mats, or center console. Do have those pesky wipers too. Most don’t flinch at the muffler, don’t care for the clutch, and don’t like the fact that I bring my own jack plate and insist that they use it. Truthfully, my usual station seldom does any more than check the lights. Emissions were a drag until the SC crossed the 25 year mark. Helps that I’ve used the same station for the last decade or so too

Thanks guys good info. Not sure what to do about the blower as I have heat but took all the other nonsense out. I thought 25 year old vehicles were exempt?
