Default [mounts soapbox]boo rennlist

oh well, looks like i made my first little OOPS on rennlist. I posted about my 83 944 that I'm parting out. I got a TON of responces but i also got the renn police called on me. I guess this is just a little rant about how i think its stupid that you must be a paying member to sell stuff on rennlist. I guess everyone needs a little cut if someone is making money on the internet huh? What happened to all the free sites (*cough* dorkiphus and others *cough*) that let you do anything you want and if you choose to donate you can?? Am i just getting that old that the internet is getting less and less free?

meh, i guess i should get off my soap box huh? well thanks for listening, I'll be here all week and remember to tip your waiters and waitresses.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but it isn't like they don't tell you you have to be a paying member to advertise stuff for sale. Their site costs $ to run and administer, and those funds need to come from somewhere. There are other sites that let you post for free.

And while Dorkiphus does not charge, if you will notice Chris has had to solicite donations in order to pay for the hosting service. Why should you expect someone else fork out all the $ for you to play for free? Sometimes you just have to step up to the plate and pay your fair share...

No real comment on the Rennlist issue other than it costs money to own and operate web forums. I do think the Internet is getting more expensive to run every year. Net neutrality is currently a big issue:

Hopefully this isn't too far off topic!

oh, I'm not trying to say that the internet is "free" I used to host a few sites myself i know how expensive it is. I also have 2 vbulletin licences which have set me back a pretty penny. But in all fairness, $17 a person for a 3K person website, even if 1/5 of the members register, thats enough money to run the site, all the licences, and do everything you need for years. So where is the justice in that? the person that owns rennlist is no longer trying to break even, he is trying to decide if he wants to buy the 997 GT3 or wait for the 997 GT3 RS (ok, so i doubt he is that rich, but you get the point).

fact is, they are a little retentive over on rennlist. to avoid the renn gestapo, you could continue doing what you're doing w/ the people that are interested through pm's no?

Yep. I agree.

The rules are the rules though....which is why I never offer my extra parts for sale on Rennlist since I'm not a paying member.

Now yer talkin'.

One way is to offer parts for free, mentioning other parts are available. Of course you'd have to have some parts that you're willing to give away...

John has provided a great BBS for a number of years and makes his living doing so, if he can grow the business and buy a GT3, more power to him. Who ever said that making money is wrong? You comment about tipping wait staff in your first post, how about tipping Rennlist for providing you with a service.
