Check out: http://www.zag.si/~jank/public/bmw/oil_bible.pdf

Updated somewhat regularly (updates in orange)

Page 174-75 for 20w50 specs and page 151 for the acronym legend. Do a little more reading up top to see how/why the different properties are weighed and the oils ultimately scored.

You may be surprised where you favorite oil is ranked. Been using Havoline since.....

Dorkiphus for oil guys: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

and their forums: http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi

Search around....neat stuff.

HHHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Looks like I have some rethinking to do. Looks like I need to corner my oil rep and ask (again) to explain the weight rating system. Either he is off the mark or my retention skills are lacking. Good info Charlie, thanks

IIRC, 20W50 = 20W at ambient temps, but has the viscosity of 50W at high temps. I'm sure there's a real temp value for when its performing like 20W or 50W, but I have no idea what those are.

Question

Shouldn't I run 10w-40 all year round? Porsche now recommends 40 weight in all their cars.

Although for a water pumper poseur porsche, my engine rebuilder urged me to use Mobile One 15w50 for the race car.

Just because they recommend it for their new cars does not mean it's right for the older ones. There is 30+ years of proof the 20W50 is the right stuff for your particular motor...

Should I go with 40 weight in the summer, or is 20w-50 ok for all year?
