It's always worth driving a bad one so you know when you have a good one!

That's not a bad price now if the engine & trans hve no serious problems.

Someone in Raleigh sold an SC for $8,000 last month
Horrible home paint job.
Needed head studs
Pep Boys racing seats
Needed clutch
Rear brake air ducts cut into rear quarter panels and one was crooked

There is a Porsche shop by me that is selling an 85 Carrera Coupe with 245,000 miles on it in Raleigh
Fresh rebuilt motor chipped and a G-50t rans conversion
White with F&R spoilers
Interior is maron and is well worn.
White Paint need serious buffing job
Very fast but the ride is very rough (Stiff suspension)
asking $14,000
Been on the market since August.

Not exactly, he's saying expect things to be out of wack for a 6K car, but you get what you pay for. If I got what I paid for, then I'd just have a rolling chassis. There are deals out there, you just have to be patient and know when to pull the trigger. He's saying that with a 6K car, you should expect it to need major work. IMO that's not so, I paid 1,400 more and my 911 never needed any major mechanical work. (knock on wood) Not to mention I got a number of pros, like power windows, sport seats, and a roof. Steve, you paid more than 10G's, did you get a roof? If I pay more than ten grand, I expect a roof to come with the car. Besides the seller threw in tons of spare parts that I sold for $$$$.
I guess what I'm getting at is that with Porsches, it's always a buyer's market, unless a seller is holding onto a unique, or rare Porsche. Well maintained Porsches can be had for a reasonable amount, you don't have to break the bank, just know what you're looking for and where to look. Besides }{, you paid more than 10G's and your 911 didn't even come with back seats.

Knowledge is power!!

Ok I looked at this tonight. I only spent about 5 min looking it over since I wanted to go home and eat. I took it for a ride with the mechanic who prepped it. Here is my definitely non-expert analysis.

It's clean, but not especially "nice." Tan interior that's seen some sun. Cracking on the driver's door, map pocket pulling away. Paint is waxed, but dull if that makes sense. It's like a matte finish but buffed with a coat of wax.... Motor seemed sound, revved right up with no oddities. Very clean and dry (on top). Rubber fuel lines.

Pulled strong. In fact on dry pavement, I actual had the back step out in first gear on a slight turn out of the parking lot. I don't know whether the tires were messed up or there was a lot of armor all on them.

The throw out bearing is bad. I noticed the tell tale groan when stepping on the clutch. I don't recall how it works, but you can still shift it. The shifting was a little sloppy it's a 915. The 1st gear syncro may be worn. The targa top needs recovering. It's curling at the edges (front and back) which will be hellaceously loud at any thing over 60 (ask me how I know). It's missing the big accordian hose for the heater. You will have no heat until it's replaced. The a/c was still installed and the smog pump was gone (good). The sheetmetal was patched where it was removed.

I didn't drive very far, just a couple of blocks. The handling was "OK". Pretty tight...nothing that seemed odd. Forgot to bounce the shocks.

For a "Porsche and Mercedes" shop, they sure didn't have many others (or any )

This car is not a show piece, but is probably a good driver for the price. Like my initial assessment said, a nice sunny day and that will sell to someone looking for something different than the usual convertables. . An enthusiast who knows these cars....?

Dealer sent me a bunch of photos of the engine. PM me your address if you want them.

Yes, but I choose not to use it. Sometimes I forget it's a fun car on a cloudy cold day as well.

The 87 is a TL...no guarantee of orig unless you check, but 12.5 would be a good price for one...
