Default Thumping noise at low speed

When I pull out of my parking space I hear a thumping from the rear. It is heard only at low speed in first gear.

I suspect CV boots/joints but the boots are not torn or damaged. Would they make that noise if it was time to clean and lubricate them?

You can check if the CV joints need re-packing by grabbing a half-shaft and sliding it side to side. Do each side separately. It's easier on a lift but you can do it on a jackstand.

The half shaft should slide back and forth. It should feel nice and tight but like it's sliding in nice gushy grease. It should not just go thump and feel like there's no cushioning.

Even duct tape can't fix stupid... but it can muffle the sound!

How loud is the thump? Is it kind of a dull noise that goes with the speed of the car? I'd check the CVs first (just like Bob described). Could also be rear bearings or tire out of balance, depending on the noise.

Just a low dull thump. I eliminated the tire as the culprit as I am on new rims (balanced) and the sound was there on the old rims.

I'll have to wait for warmer weather to do the test as it is just too damn cold.

Thanks for the procedure Bob.

Howard, is the noise rotational, or in other words, does it intensify as the speed of the vehicle increase? I'm curious as to how long you have been hearing theat noise you are describing. Trouble with noises is they are hard to diagnose without actually hearing them. If you have been hearing it before you put new wheels on the car, then you ought not hold off getting it diagnosed before your noise problem becomes an expensive problem.

Howard - come on over to the tech session today at Funktion and get the car on an inspection lift (signup sheet, you'll have to wait). It's indoors, and there's a bunch of experts to diagnose.

Howard, that sounds like a great idea. This will give you a chance to get to the undercarriage of your car and be warm at the same time. There will be plenty of guys there that will be able to help you figure out what that noise is you described, and who knows, there may be someone there that has had the same thing that will say "oh yeah, I had that, all you have to do is...." Then Howard, you will lnow what you have to work with. Great idea Bob!!

Yea, last time I had a thump that was driving me crazy, it turned out to be a beer bottle under the passengers seat!
BTW, I have a warm garage if you can't make it to Tech.
I'm probably only 10 min away.
